"Audubon Aquarium of the Americas" 2011 : May 27 - 28, 2011

"AUDUBON AQUARIUM OF THE AMERICAS" 2011
1 Canal Street
New Orleans, LA
Official website is here: http://www.auduboninstitute.org/visit/aquarium

"The Big Easy," "New Orleans," or "N'awlins," as the locals call it, is a tasty gumbo stew of African, French, Spanish, Italian and German cultures. It's a place of lush tropical courtyards hidden behind unassuming building fronts. It's where you eat sugary beignets at 3am. It's the birthplace of Louis Armstrong and jazz, and where, above the water line left by Hurricane Katrina, the good times still roll. Located on the Mississippi River adjacent to the French Quarter, Audubon Aquarium of the Americas immerses you in an underwater world. The colors of a Caribbean reef come alive in the walk-through tunnel, while penguins and Southern sea otters enchant you with their antics. Touch a sting ray, feed a parakeet, and marvel at the gigantic sharks, tarpon, and rays in the 400,000 gallon Gulf of Mexico Exhibit. It first opened in 1990." ~ Reprinted text from the official website here: http://www.auduboninstitute.org/visit/aquarium

"In 2005, the facilities were affected by Hurricane Katrina. Though the structure survived the initial hurricane and was on high ground above the subsequent flooding of most of the city, electricity outages continued and the backup power generators were unable to fully operate the sophisticated life support systems needed to keep the animals alive. Aquarium staffers were forced to evacuate the facility only to return four days later to discover that most of the 10,000 fish did not survive. The aquarium reopened on May 26, 2006." ~ Reprinted text from here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquarium_of_the_Americas
