Detroit Skyline : Various Perspectives of the Detroit Skyline

Various Perspectives of the Detroit Skyline

Visit Laurelwood (Property is For Sale) : This house was originally built in 1931 as a small one story house on a working ranch at the edge of town. By 1960 it had become a two story three bedroom house on a .41 acre lot and incorporated into the Beverly Glen neighborhood of Visalia. A picture of that house in about 1960 is shown in picture three.
It was then that Mr Douglass purchased the property and began a 35+ year project of transforming it into the pseudo-Victorian showcase it is today. I have learned several things by talking to different ones who knew him or helped him work on the house. Mr Douglass traveled the world purchasing windows and doors, statues and sconces, wrought iron and sculpted wood, all of which he incorporated into his dream home. There is a very old original signed Italian marble statue, leaded glass windows and doors from Europe, and a marble floor tile with semi-precious stones from Brazil to name a few. Most of the tin ceiling tiles were reclaimed from other buildings. The stained glass windows are one of a kind. The cupola is from the top of the old Jefferson School in Visalia. Part of the square dormer came from an old City of Visalia building. Most of the brick work he did himself. He also cut and installed the cedar roof shingles with the help of two of his sons who still live in Visalia.
The kitchen is a blend of old and new. The stove is an original late 1800s Grand Universal cast iron piece fitted with a modern four burner Dacor stove top. The built in refrigerator is an older Traulsen stainless steel model. The built in dishwasher face matches the other custom cabinets. The oven and microwave are older models. The kitchen seating was modified from pews from a Bulgarian church. And there is an antique chrome and porcelain stove which has been converted into an indoor briquette barbeque too.
The spiral stairs came from London, as did the small gas burning fireplace upstairs. There is a very large linen closet in the downstairs bedroom suite. There are His and Hers antique pedestal sinks in the downstairs bath, and the six foot cast iron center fill claw foot bath tub is complemented with a modern and roomy shower stall plus a separate jacuzzi tub. There is a duplicate cast iron claw foot tub in the upstairs bath fitted with a shower head and curtain attachment. Original antique brass water fixtures are throughout the house, including the kitchen, baths and wet bar.
All types of flooring were used throughout the house: marble (cultured?), tile, hardwood, vinyl and carpet. Wall decorations, wainscoting, etc.are used extensively. The two bedrooms upstairs are separated from the family/game room by a sliding french door. Each bedroom has its own closet, and there is also a walk in closet as well as another storage area behind closed doors off the family room. At the top of the main stairway are bookshelves and a sitting area. And there are five skylights, each incorporating a stained or leaded glass window.
The inside of the garage has been finished as well, and has a built in workbench with drawers and shelves, a window seat with stained glass, as well as a large separate storage area. The automatic gate secures the covered driveway which will accommodate two additional cars.
The home is available for purchase including all furnishings. Buy it furnished and move right in, or let it earn income as a vacation rental.
