4-Your-Top-50-Photos > popular all-time > Mono Lake, California, is all that is left of a huge lake that was formed about 750,000 years ago (if I remember right), and is fed by 3 streams/rivers that flow into the lake. There is no exit to the lake, and the fresh water becomes a salty brine with approx. 3 times the salt content of the oceans. What you see in the lake is called tufa (pronounced too-fah) which is a calcium carbonate formation that has become visible since the level of the lake has dropped. There are approx. 300 different species of birds that live in the area, as well as the brine flies that are especially prevalent in the summer months. Brine flies will not lite on people, so you can disturb great clouds of black flies that billow about, and not be affected. There are no fish in the lake, just brine shrimp that are the only creature that can survive in the high alkaline water. If you look closely, you will see what looks to be a black striped shadow over the water, especially close to the bottom of the photo. These are actually the brine flies that are floating on the water.
