Mopti : Mopti is often refered to as "the Venice of Mali" because it consists of three islands linked by dykes. It lies at the converging point of the Bani and Niger rivers. In addition to its fish and salt markets, Mopti is well known for its diversity. Many of Mali's ethnic groups including the Bambara, Bozo, Dogon, Songhai and Peul inhabit Mopti.

Le Pays Dogon : Pays Dogon (the Dogon Country) of eastern Mali is one of Mali's most visited areas because of the massive escarpements that stretch for hundreds of kilometers and the villages that are built next to and in these rock formations. The Dogon people were one of the only ethnic groups in sub-Saharan Africa to retain their culture almost entirely during and after colonial rule. In addition to Islam and Christianity, the Dogon have managed to retain their traditional religion. Their beliefs have been studied with fascination by theologists and philisophers all over the world.

Djenne : Djenne is the oldest city in sub-Saharan Africa. It is situated just south of the Sahara desert and Timbuktou and between the Bani and Niger rivers. Djenne is now one of Mali's agriculture trade hubs. The weekly monday market brings people from all over the region to trade and sell goods. Djenne also is home to the largest mud mosque in the world. The Great Mosque is made of sun-dried mud bricks held together by mud mortar.

Three Year Favorites : Here's the photos I have running on my personal screen saver- either I consider it a favorite photo, or the subject enables me to ponder for a moment or two- a few even qualify under both. The photos compile my life over the last three few years, mostly the last one year since I purchased my digital camera- most are Africa since that has been my home for three years, some are from my visits back home. I hope you can enjoy them all!

Edge of Sudan : I worked in Northeastern Sudan from March of 03 to March of 04 with the semi-nomadic Beja tribe. In the village of Telkook, I set up the base to accomodate logistics, feeding, food for work, and education programs in the surrounding villages. Throughout my time there year, I took many photos on my 35mm SLR only to loose them all in a freak accident upon returning to the States. All these photos here were taken by Nathan Wittcamp, a friend of mine who took over the work after I left.

Not only was our location geographically on the edge of Sudan close to Eritrea, but the people we lived with were marginallized by the gov't of Sudan and lived as if they were always on the outside edge of their own county. In addition, I many times felt at the edge of my personall sanity during my time in this place! Enjoy.
