Day 13: NCA to Serengeti : We're headed to the Serengeti today & we saw a pride of lions who had just finished feasting on a zebra w/the carcass splayed open. Later, we saw two hyenas in a mud puddle & got a fantastic surprise when one of them pulled a half-eaten wildebeest calf carcass out of the puddle! The zebra & wildebeest herds were starting to gather for the Great Migration in the 10's of thousands (nothing like the millions at it's peak) & it was jaw dropping! Best of all, I saw my first leopard! I'm now part of the Big 5 Club! We had lunch with a rock hyrax (related to the elephant), then drove to our lodge, which was one of the most beautiful places I've ever stayed. Check out our videos - #1 & at the end of the gallery!

Day 16: Serengeti : Our last day in the Serengeti didn't disappoint! We drove 2hrs to the central part of the park, where we encountered a mating pair of lions literally right next to the road, THREE different leopards (seeing one is rare, seeing three is unheard of!), a pride of lions IN A TREE, and a mega-herd of elephants! What a fantastic way to end the safari portion of our trip! Check out our videos at the end of the gallery!

Day 17: Serengeti & Grumeti Airstrip : Our last day in the Serengeti was bittersweet. Upon arriving at the airstrip, we were entertained by men chasing 11 giraffe off the runway, but they just kept coming back! And then we waited... and waited... and waited. We waited for over 3hrs for our plane!! And with no water available on the "concourse", it made the long wait even worse. Luckily, there was a private lodge nearby that let us cool off in their shade. When our plane arrived & we were up in the air, you could really get a sense for just how big the Serengeti was. We flew over all the spots we had just traveled thru (Ngorongoro Crater, L. Manyara, L. Tarangire.) It was a nice rewind of the trip. Once we arrived in Arusha, we got on a bus for a 4-hr drive back to Nairobi. It was a loooong day of travel, but looking back, it was part of the adventure. Check out our videos at the end of the gallery!

Day 15: Serengeti & Balloon Ride : 4am came very early after getting very little sleep from the massive thunderstorm the night before. We headed out for our balloon ride & sadly Mother Nature didn't play nice. It was overcast, meaning no great sunrise. It was very still, meaning we didn't drift far. And there weren't any animals in our area. Oh & the basket was WAAAAY too crowded. After landing with a THUD in a field of fire ants, we were treated to an English breakfast, complete with roaming elephant & buffalo. We headed back to the lodge for lunch & a nap, after getting some great hippo & giraffe shots. Check out our videos at the end of the gallery!

Day 14: Serengeti : First full day in the Serengeti didn't disappoint. We were near a hippo pool & heard lots of vocalizing, so we pulled in just in time to see a bull hippo killing a baby hippo (thrashing & drowning it) while 10 crocs waited for him to give up the carcass. Then once the crocs got a hold of it, it was gone in a matter of seconds! So sad, but that's nature. Saw a gorgeous cheetah "posing" on tree stump & an old cape buffalo who had sustained some injuries relaxing in a shallow pool. We had a massive thunderstorm that night, giving us a beautiful light show, lots of much needed rain & continuous rolling thunder. The video I got doesn't do it justice, but check it out anyway. Check out our videos at the end of the gallery!

Day 12: Ngorongoro Conservation Area : I had never visited the N. Conservation Area before, so this was quite a treat! We were able to go off-road to get closer to the animals, which you can't do in other parks. One of the highlights was photographing the mama cheetah & her 4 cubs. There were several vehicles around her & one had a couple ginormous lenses sticking out (I had lens envy!) When I got home, I saw a photo posted by one of my favorite nature photogs, Thomas Mangelsen, of those same cats in the same location as mine! That was him in the other vehicle w/the big lenses! Yea, I'm a photog nerd. Check out our videos at the end of the gallery!

Day 18: Nairobi to Seattle : We arrived at the ariport a couple hours early & waited for the longest day of the trip to be over & get home to our kids. Starting with a 9hr flight back to London, a 9.5hr layover & 10.5 hr flight to Seattle was brutal, but it was worth it! We had an amazing trip & we met some wonderful people along the way. If you think we look exhausted, it's because we were. And we'll be back... just you wait & see!

Day 6: Amboseli, Masai Village & School : We spent time at a Masaai Village & school today, what the tour called "A Day in the Life". The chief, Joseph, was a wonderful host, introducing us to his family & explaining how the village operates. Then we walked a short distance to the school. We interacted with some of the older kids who had lots of questions for us. Afterwards, we went back to the village where we were treated to a mock wedding celebration w/lots of dancing & singing. It was so beautiful! The afternoon game drive was filled w/lots of elephants, zebras & a gorgeous sunset on Mt. Kilimanjaro. Check out our videos at the end of the gallery!

Day 7: Amboseli to Tarangire : Mornings in Africa are breathtaking. The colors range from purple to orange & everything in-between. Mt. Kilimanjaro was out in all her glory, as if she knew we were leaving. A couple hyenas blocked the road, after gorging on whatever they had hidden in the bushes nearby. Shortly after crossing into Tanzania, we had lunch at Shanga House, which employs deaf & blind people from around the area. Later, we stopped to watch the happenings at a market & then met two young Masaai boys who were transitioning into adulthood. We arrived at our tented camp at Lake Burunge after traveling thru fields of sesame seeds. Check out our videos: #35, #111, #112 in the gallery!
