Aler IDP Camp : On Wednesday of the first week after work the Higgins took us to Block M of Aler IDP (internally displaced peoples)Camp. Block M has over a 1,300 people and the camp itself has roughly 20,000.

The Ugandan Gvnt has set up these camps for the villagers throughout the north in response to LRA presence. The villagers have suffered nightmarishly by the hands of the LRA for the past 20 years - thousands of abductions, murders, and destruction of their property, disruption of their lives.

Despite reading up on the situation in Northern Uganda, the conversations we had with people that had been there, and our time at the orphanage, we were still unprepared for what saw and felt.

What has stuck with me clear into tomorrow is the great need... along with the incredible beauty and resilience of the people. Despite their overwhelming poverty and deplorable conditions they were still able to find a smile for each other and us.

God bless the people of Aler and all IDP camps. May help and a resolution be on the way.

The Pan Afric : Traveling north from Entebbe we passed through much lush countryside, through fascinating towns, over the Nile and finally to Lira, where we made our way to the Pan Afric. We were blessed with very basic but comfortable accommodations and were very thankful for this, in a land with so much need where so many are without. We met some great people and came away from the PanFric (as they call it) with many stories.

Pilanesberg 2006 : Photos taken on a recent visit to Pilanesberg Game Reserve about 200km NW of Pretoria. All photos, including landscapes, were taken with the Bigma. The vehicle window was used for support, except in the case where Simon du Plessis' monopod bucket (SdP) was used.

Because of winter conditions, extremely strong contrasts were found between the veld and the animals. This made for very difficult photographic conditions - especially as the animals were seldom active before 11 in the morning.

The order of the pictures is more or less that in which they were taken.

Lira Life : Out here, being successful at work many times means being successful at life; separations between work and life do not exist here as many people know them in the West.
As with spiritual life, social life in Africa crosses all boundaries, and part of the challenge in working here is blending their inclusive style with our partitional style!
This gallery shows parts of our living style here in Lira; it's posh, we know, but the great achievments in our living conditions only spure us on towards greater achievements in our work!

Africa 2006 : Jerry and I welcomed in the New Year on the Maasai Mara in Kenya Africa with our two dear friends, Vahe and Adele and our guide Tim Trench. (Tim was our guide when we visited Africa in 2000). It was a relaxing and peaceful way to bring in 2006. We saw lots of animals and were even chased by an elephant.

Here are some memorable photos of our safari. Don't forget to read the captions under each photo....

Mopti : Mopti is often refered to as "the Venice of Mali" because it consists of three islands linked by dykes. It lies at the converging point of the Bani and Niger rivers. In addition to its fish and salt markets, Mopti is well known for its diversity. Many of Mali's ethnic groups including the Bambara, Bozo, Dogon, Songhai and Peul inhabit Mopti.
