Seeing Red : The human eye is drawn inescapably to red. Sometimes just a tiny speck of red in a scene or an image captures our attention. It can be enough to make us stop at an otherwise unremarkable looking 'thumbnail' of an image and open it for a closer look.

This gallery is a celebration of all things red, and all the infinite varieties of that color. Even though red is universally the color for warning of danger, I believe that most people experience it as a joyful color. And of course, those of us who were raised in the Christian tradition, or at least in a culture that celebrates Christmas, associate red with the Christmas holiday season.

Some of my choices for this gallery will be obvious. The red is very 'in your face'. Others exemplify the drawing power of just a small patch of red in a scene. The subject matter can be almost anything.

Meijer Gardens, Grand Rapids Michigan : The Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park, in the NE corner of Grand Rapids, Michigan, is a 125 acre campus that is laid out in a variety of areas for displaying the sculpture collection in a context of extensive plantings of trees and flowers, along with a number of charming water features. Entry into the gardens is through a large building that houses several conservatories for special plant environments, galleries, meeting rooms, etc. This photo gallery starts with pictures I took on my first visit there, in early October of 2010. The only camera I had with me was my point-and-shoot Canon G10 (with the noisiest sensor ever created). Still, I hope the pictures give you a flavor of some of the main features of this marvelous facility. There was a Chihuly exhibit of art glass mounted in the gardens, and pictures of those pieces are in a separate gallery. Voting was just finishing up for the Grand Rapids ArtPrize, billed as the largest prize for art in the world ($250,000 Grand Prize, and $450,000 total prize money). Some of the entries were available for viewing in a garden that lies just outside the main building, and is thus free to the viewing public. Pictures of those works appear in a separate gallery, also.

New Uploads - miscellaneous subjects : Photos of subjects that don't fit any of the specialized categories for recent uploads.

Photos will stay here until I accumulate enough new ones or until I'm tired of seeing them here, and then be transferred to their permanent home galleries. In some cases I'll indicate what the target gallery is, if it isn't obvious from the subject of the picture.
Remember, comments left here may refer to pictures or groups of pictures that no longer appear in the gallery.
