Barton Park, Dam, and Pond : Barton Park is a small park that can be accessed from either side of the Huron River. It's primary feature is Barton Dam, at which the ca. 1912 hydroelectric plant is located, and is still generating power. Paved stretches on either side of the dam make good platforms from which to fish. A small floating dock is used by the Gallup Park canoe livery as the launch point for paddling trips back down to Gallup Park in rented canoes, kayaks, or stand-up paddle boards. There is a pedestrian walkway across the dam, from which fishermen can cast or drop lines on either side of the dam. A hiking/jogging trail runs along the south bank of Barton Pond, the impoundment behind the dam.

Stained Glass Windows and Other Ornamentation : Examples of stained glass, mostly from church and chapel windows. For some of the images this is their 'original' home gallery. Others have been collected here from other galleries. Not all of the pictures are taken from the preferred backlit direction. The exceptions are cases where only the exterior view was accessible, and the windows themselves were of exceptional interest to me, either aesthetically or historically.

About me : I've taken pictures of the beautiful things I find in nature all of my adult life. Virtually everything in nature interests me, from grand landscapes to the tiniest detail, though I don't possess the equipment needed for macro photography or the big lenses for 'shooting' animals in the wild. Beyond the visual appeal, I'm drawn to things which illustrate, or raise questions about, most things scientific. Biology, geology, meteorology, astronomy, physics, you name it. I also find interest in man-made things that show strange, beautiful, unexpected, evocative shapes, patterns, colors. I look for these same things in the pictures other people take, and always appreciate whimsy, humor, back-references in them when I find it. And I look for pictures that require a technical expertise that lies beyond my grasp.

I take a few pictures of people that I'm willing to share, but mostly I enjoy looking at people pictures that others take. I prefer candid to posed shots.

Like most people, I love to travel, so I always look for pictures of places I've been and places I hope to see, or even places I can only dream of seeing.

As I browse through the various photo hosting sites that I regularly visit, I often discover interests I didn't even know I had...new subjects, new ways of depicting, new places...

I'll use this gallery to post photos that have a special meaning for me, or that illustrate who I am as a photographer.

OLD REDS : Port Hope : Wandering about on a recent road trip in the Cobourg and Port Hope area, we stumbled upon this interesting photo-op. Sorta like a graveyard for dead firetrucks, but really, they are part of a larger museum collection, patiently waiting their turn for refurbishing and restoration at the Firefighter's Museum.

Doors windows & other openings : It seems to me that no other architectural features carry such a freight of emotional associations, recollections, recognitions as windows, doors, gateways, portals of all kinds. They mark literal or figurative boundaries. They can fill us with dread, bemuse us with nostalgia, or lift us up with hope and gladness. They spark our creativity and ingenuity, and allow us to express our individuality when they are ours to design and adorn. They control to some extent the light that fills a space, and thus how we experience the space. They speak to us in so many ways.
