Big Sur in the Morning 5:30 AM. Alarm goes off. It's always painful. People that say they are "morning people" -- I think they are lying. But, when in a beautiful place, I always force myself, military style, to pop out of bed. There are hikes to be made and photos to take!I stayed at the Ragged Point Inn. My room had a little fireplace and everything (which made it even harder to get out of bed!). After I got downstairs, I started a little hike to get a good vantage of the coast and the sunrise. Of course, there was a fence blocking the best bit, so I jumped over it like Carl Lewis (a much older, whiter, and less jumpy Carl Lewis), and edged along the rocky coast to get a good spot. I forgot to put on my hiking shoes and mistakenly donned my Cole-Haans while in the dark. Big mistake. Those don't make for good hiking shoes, especially after five minutes of getting soaked in morning dew from the foliage I was ripping my way through.But, I had on my earphones and was blasting away music... all was good... the sun came up, the clouds were perfect, and I took this photo.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Bathwater Warm Pool at Sunset I didn’t actually get in this water, but I was imagining that this was exactly the same as my body temperature. It just kinda looks like that, doesn’t it?I took this photo at the Disney resort on Oahu. I didn’t even stay here… just stopped by for a few hours with Tom to take photos! The Nameless Pagoda SleepsTom and I visited this Pagoda late one evening in Li Jiang. There was zero wind, so the perfect reflection made us happy. The thing that did not make us happy was having to get on the ground with our tripods in the lowest position. Temple in the Jungle Highlands - Byodo-In I would never have guessed that something as ornate and unique as this would be buried up in the deep jungled highlands of Oahu!It is a popular destination, and I guess people in Oahu know about it, but I had never heard of such a place. This is the Byodo-In Temple, and I happened to arrive right when the sun came out. The Mysterious Rock of Wonder The day in Death Valley was about 115 F (46 C). It wasn’t a dry heat either… there has been a lot of humidity here and there is flash lightning in the day and night. This location here took a lot of time, effort, and 4×4 to find. I took five gallons of water, a map, and some warnings from the place that rented the jeep that this area was inaccessible because of recent road wash-outs from rivers. Well, they were right! So getting the 4×4 over and through the washed out rivers took many more hours than expected. I only suffered one minor injury when my head slammed into the rollbar during a clumsy maneuver. The Ruins of the old Copper Mine Here’s another view of the ruins at sunrise. I was down on the island for about two weeks, and it was very nice to have a guaranteed nice sunrise every morning! The skies were never dull… always clouds and drama. Central Park in the Fall I had spent the afternoon alone while traveling (as usual, it seems) in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in the middle of New York City. It sits on the Eastern edge of Central Park. It was a little cold outside, but I decided to walk across the park anyway, just as the sun was setting. A Tropical Sunset I did a lot of snorkeling out in that bay. This whole area of Virgin Gorda is called The Baths, and it has some of the best beaches in the world. There are basically no waves of any consequence. So, if you’re just learning to snorkel, it’s a perfect environment.
