Exploring South America This is probably one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been. I knew it was going to be pretty beforehand, but I wasn’t really prepared for the non-stop grandeur of the landscapes. We chose the perfect time to go, right in the middle of Autumn. The backpacking took about twice as long as expected. I couldn’t stop myself from holding up every few minutes to set up for another photo. It was irresistible! - Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Tetons, Revisited This area is not too far from Yellowstone. Just outside of the south exit, there is a fairly short drive to this area of Wyoming. It's on the way to Jackson Hole. This is also an amazing place if you are into Bison. There are hundreds and hundred of bison in this area. A free one was roaming about while I took this. They're actually quite dangerous for something that looks like a giant silly stuffed animal.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Play in Beverly Hills, Shop in Beverly Hills Well, those signs pretty much say it all. The city council voted down the less-popular alternatives, "Get Mugged in Beverly Hills, Get Ladyboy Hookers in Beverly Hills". Those were right out. While I was shooting this, a stretch limo pulled up beside me. The driver and I had a nice conversation... He had someone in the back, but the screen was up to keep out noise and wandering eyes. - Trey Ratcliff Read the rest here at the Stuck in Customs blog.
France, Through the Centuries I'll be arriving in France soon, and I can't wait. There is something very comforting about some of these places where time seems to stand still through the ages. Notre Dame on the Seine is one of these places. I take photos every time I go... - Trey Ratcliff Read the rest of this here at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Lotus Sunrise These delicate shapes are seen on a variety of temples all over southeast Asia, India, and other parts of the Far East. It is the shape of a Lotus Blossom, a timeless symbol, and it is repeated over and over here at Angkor Wat. The lotus represents the purity of body, speech, and mind. Like the lotus, these should float above the muddy waters of attachment and desire. The shot was taken around 5 or 6 AM in the morning. While shooting, I was attended to by a small Cambodian girl that would bring me strong Vietnamese coffee whenever I ran out, which was often. I don't know where she would go to get it -- she would disappear off into the jungle and come walking calmly back every 15 minutes or so, smiling. - Trey Ratcliff Read more, including some info on my upcoming London photowalk (and vote on some locations for shots!) here at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Abandoned Farmhouse This place was another one of those New Zealand fence-hoppers. I'm never 100% sure that jumping over fences is a great move. But if the place looks abandoned, I just go for it. I don't mean any harm.... I'm just going to take photos. So far, this has never caused me an issue (except for when I forget to check to see if the fence is electrified).I don't do a lot of these urbex shots, but I certainly do enjoy them. Did you know there are several forums out there that have listings of abandoned buildings around the world? - Trey Ratcliff Read the rest here at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Grand Entrance This is the entryway to the Portofino Hotel at Universal Orlando. It's a pretty posh place. I get nervous when I see young kids running around these places at full speed. I get really nervous when I see my own kids doing it! We stayed here a few nights and it proved to be a perfect location for accessing Universal Studios. There is a little lake/canal system in the back that connects to the main park so you can take little boats back and forth. More importantly, there are a ton of interesting things scattered around for photography! - Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
The Best Fish Evar I have a restaurant suggestion! The best fish I have ever had is in that little viking-house there to the right. You have to duck to get through the door. Once inside, you emerge into a darkened viking-style dining hall (imagine the great hall where Gríma Wormtongue held powah over King Théoden of Rohan). This spot is pretty well-known restaurant called Tjöruhúsið in the little town of Isafjordur. There is a little window in the back where the fishermen come every morning to deliver the fresh fish in exchange for getting to eat there for free. They bring you the food inside giant iron-clad pans… it was so awesome. I’m going back in a few months and I’m going to gorge myself here with giant dinners before heading out for all-night shooting.- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
Alone at the Raging Waterfall of Gulfoss After two weeks of being alone I was getting a bit, shall we say, lonely. I was getting in the habit of waking up around 4 or 5 PM, having a leisurely dinner, and then jumping in the car to explore new parts of Iceland throughout the white nights. On this particular day, I decided to head deep into the center of the island. My goal was to go to the parts where all the major roads do not.Along that path, I arrived here at Gulfoss about 11 PM. I've been here many times before, but there was always a few people around admiring the falls. This time, I was alone. It's so strange walking around a place like this while the sun is setting and no one is around. The feeling is like those apocalypse movies where all humans have just disappeared... just me... my gun... a trusty dog... maybe a few Icelandic elf-zombies lurking about... the more and more time I spend alone, the more reasonable this begins to sound...- Trey RatcliffClick here to read the rest of this post at the Stuck in Customs blog.
