An evening in Nanluoguxiang (南锣鼓巷), Beijing, June 2008 : Photos from some walks around the latest trendy area in Beijing(北京), Nanluoguxiang （南锣鼓巷）. Nanluoguxiang is not far from Houhai(后海), but is more low-key. There are a lot of interesting restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and shops there. It is well worth an evening. My favorite places to eat there are Shaorouren (barbecue person, 烧肉人) and a Korean restaurant Saveurs de Coree. There are a lot of other interesting looking places there but I haven't had a chance to try them.

Nanluoguxiang at night (南锣鼓巷夜景), Beijing (北京), June 2007 : Nanluoguxiang is not far from Houhai(后海), but is more low-key. There are a lot of interesting restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and shops there. It is well worth an evening. Nanluoguxiang around twilight (南锣鼓巷傍晚), June 2007 : I separated out some photos taken before sunset that were in my originally rather large gallery of Nanluoguxiang photos from 2007 and put them into this new gallery, since they have a pretty different feel from the night photos that I left in that gallery. I retitled that gallery to clarify that it is intended to be night photos. So none of these photos are new, just moved over from an existing gallery.

Mutianyu Great Wall, China : COMING SOON
Mutianyu is a section of the Great Wall of China located in Huairou County 70km northeast of Beijing. The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall is connected with Juyongguan Pass in the west and Gubeikou Gateway in the east. As one of the best-preserved parts of the Great Wall, Mutianyu section of Great Wall used to serve as the northern barrier defending the capital and the imperial tombs.

First built in the mid-6th century during the Northern Qi dynasty, Mutianyu Great Wall is older than Badaling Great Wall. In the Ming dynasty, under the supervision of General Xu Da, construction of the present wall began on the foundation of the wall of Northern Qi. In 1404, a pass was built in the wall. In 1569, the Mutianyu Great Wall was rebuilt and till today most parts of it are well preserved. The Mutianyu Great Wall has the largest construction scale and best quality among all sections of Great Wall.

Built mainly with granite, the wall is 7-8 meters high and the top is 4-5 meters wide. Comparing with other sections of Great Wall, Mutianyu Great Wall possesses unique characteristics in its construction.

Watchtowers and over-towering pass densely scatter along this section of Great Wall - exactly, 22 watchtowers in the 2250-meter-long wall.
Both the outer and inner parapets are crenellated with merlons, so that shots could be fired at the enemy on both sides - a feature very rare on other parts of the Great Wall.
The Mutianyu Pass consists of 3 watchtowers, one big in the center and two smaller on both sides. Standing on the same terrace, the three watchtowers are connected each other inside and compose a rarely seen structure among all sections of Great Wall. This section of Great Wall is surrounded by woodland and streams. The Forest-coverage Rate is over 90 percent.

Beijing （北京）, April 2006 : Some pictures of Beijing from a trip at the end of April and beginning of May. Most of the pictures are from Wudaokou (五道口) at night, especially an unnamed street in that starts at the intersection of Chengfu Road (成府路) and Wangzhuang Road (王庄路) near the Languages University (语言学院) and Wudaokou Light Rail Station (五道口城铁站), runs south, crosses the North Fourth Ring Road (北四环)at Zhanchun Bridge (展春桥), then continues south past the West Entrance of Beijing Aeronautics University (北航西门) before ending at Zhichun Road (知春路). The shops and restaurants along the road appear to be slated for demolition, presumably so a proper street can be put through, so I wanted to capture some night scenes there before they vanish. There are also a few pictures from Sanlitun (三里屯) along Gongti North Road (工体北路) from an evening stroll there, on the way to meet a friend for martinis at the now-vanished "First Cafe".
