Birds > popular today > This painted bunting had just finished enjoying some nice seeds from some freshly mowed grass. Like I have said in other descriptions of this same painted bunting, I much would have preferred a more natural environment, not one so suburban, but when I see a painted bunting, I take the shot. They are quite shy. Midlothian, Texas, April 2008
Birds > popular today > Least Flycatcher
Empidonax minimus
Cooper Marsh Conservation Area, South Lancaster, Ontario

The empid flycatchers all have yellowish wingbars that help to identify them.  Some of the guides I have read indicate that measuring the "amount" of yellow in the wingbars can be useful in identifying the empids visually, but anyone who can claim to do that is a better birder than I'll ever be.

Birds > popular today > Another flight shot from the 2008 migration south. This ruby throated hummingbird was very wary of what was going on around it and only stand about a minute at the feeder. Midlothian, Texas, August 2008
Birds > popular today > This male ruby throated hummingbird was standing guard in its recently gained territory, a twisted willow from my backyard. I took this photo in the late evening as the territory wars were winding down for the day. Midlothian, Texas, August 2008
Birds > popular today > Probably a juvenile male ruby throated hummingbird, this one hovers near some flowers and the feeders in my backyard early one evening. Midlothian, Texas, August 2008
This painted bunting had just finished enjoying some nice seeds from some freshly mowed grass. Like I have said in other descriptions of this same painted bunting, I much would have preferred a more natural environment, not one so suburban, but when I see a painted bunting, I take the shot. They are quite shy. Midlothian, Texas, April 2008
