Vasa Museum : The Vasa truly a case study in engineering feature creep. She was built in Stockholm Sweden beginning in 1626 during the Thirty Years War. She was originally laid with a much shorter keel than she has today, the reason for that was that the King changed his requirements for her shortly after the original keel was laid. To compound things further, the original shipwright died in the middle of her construction. What is believed to be the true cause of her early demise was the King's demand for a greater number of Canons on her upper decks. Thus, she was very top heavy.

Just prior to her maiden voyage, the builders executed a standard stability test in the harbor by having a full contingent of sailors run from one side of her to the other. The test was halted because it was clear she might capsize, but she was allowed to go on her maiden voyage the next day. And in a gentle wind, she rolled over and sank into the estuarial waters of Stockholm.

Fortunately for visitors and historians alike, the shipworm that typically destroy wooden shipwrecks do not live in the semi-salty lake water of Stockholm. So in the 1950s, she was discovered and raised. Today, she sits in a dim museum to protect her 400 year old wood from deterioration.
