This view of the Yaquina Bay Bridge in Newport, Oregon is taken from the roadside near Newport's oldest building The Yaquina Bay Lighthouse. The Yaquina Bay lighthouse is 40 feet tall and overlooks the entrance to Yaquina Bay. It was built in 1871 by The Light House Service and was operated between November 3, 1871 and October 1, 1874. The lighthouse is Oregon’s only fifth order light; its beacon was produced by a whale oil lamp within a fifth-order Fresnel lens. A Civil War Captain for the Union Army, Charles H. Peirce, served as head keeper at Yaquina Bay Lighthouse.
