I Always Wanted to Try That! : This was a special event that took place at Washington Crossing Historic Park on August 2, 2009. The event gave an opportunity for visitors to learn about Colonial crafts and trades and gave them a chance to try their hand at how things were done in the "good old days". The weather was horrendous in the morning but by the time the event started the rain stopped and it wound up being a rather pleasant afternoon.

Hazy Humid Evening : It's been "officially" summer for about a week and it sure feels like it! On the day I took these photos it had been raining on and off the entire day. After dinner a friend of mine and I took a short road trip to Washington Crossing State Park to take some photos. Enroute to the park we greeted with these views of the Delaware River enshrouded in mist.

We did eventually make it to the park, but the sun had already dipped too low in the sky to get many photos. But I did manage to get a few from the park.

Memorial Day at Washington Crossing Park - 2008 : After living in Bucks County for over 10 years, I finally had the chance to attend the Memorial Day services at Washington Crossing Park this year! The service took place in perfect weather at the Unknown Soldier graves located behind the Thompson-Neeley House. I was not expecting to see such a cast of characters, but since the service took place at the site of Revolutionary War graves, they were perfect and added a wonderful touch.

Washington Crossing Park : The Friday after Thanksgiving we still had some color on the trees, which is unusual for the area in which I live. Since it was positively gorgeous outside, I decided to head out to photograph some of the last fall color of the season. And apparently it was a good move on my part because a few days later it was all gone.

Ringing Rocks Park : As you drive along Route 32 or Route 611 in Bucks County you will notice signs for Ringing Rocks Park. If you decide to follow these signs they will take you to a parking lot in the middle of a forest. As you step out of your car, and walk down the path in the forest you will encounter people carrying hammers. Yes, hammers!

The path works its way through the forest and you feel as if you've been transported back in time: you hear no traffic and there are no houses visible. It's just you and nature and those people with the hammers.

Suddenly a ring-like chime breaks the silence. Soon more chime-like sounds emanate from the forest. Soon you spot a clearing in the distance. Is it a lake? You walk toward it only to find that it is a 7 acre boulder field. And those people with the hammers? They're out in the middle of the boulder field making their own "rock music" by hitting these boulders with hammers. That's where the chime like sounds came from. Ah! Mystery solved.

Or is the mystery really solved? No one is really sure how they got here, though several theories abound. These boulders are made of diabase, and this particular type of rock extends from the Ringing Rocks area all the way down to Devils Den in Gettysburg, PA. Not all the boulders at Ringing Rocks State Park make this ringing sound and no one knows why. Part of the field extends into the woods but there are no trees in the middle of the boulder field. You need soil for them to take root and for some unknown reason there is no soil in the middle of the field.

So there really is a mystery or two at this park! It's a fun place for a family outing and do bring your hammer! It's not every day you get the opportunity to make real rock music.

And while you're there, also take the path that goes around the right side of the boulder field to the waterfall. There's not much water flowing there these days but it's easy to picture what a grand spectacle it must have been when the Delaware Indians still roamed the area.
