2013 nature : I installed v1.2.1 firmware this week (5/1/13), which, among other things, improves single-point focus with a telephoto+teleconverter. I like the new software.
The new firmware also exports uncompressed clean HDMI: I ordered a SmallHD AC7 to see what that's about. It may help w focusing while shooting video in dark auditoriums.

Wildlife photographed in 2013 - candidates for next year's Apple iPhoto Calendar: the prints are terrific.
(Click slideshow, on an iMac, even an older one like mine..)

The winter birds were 10' away, captured with a 300mm lens with a 2.0TC: 0.34" DOF.

Red Butte Garden : While Chase played Joe at SL Swim & Tennis Tammy and I hiked Red Butte Garden, searching for Hollyhocks.
The garden is extremely robust and colorful, except in the Hollyhocks department. It was a perfect day for a
walk, with the temperature around 80 degrees and few other visitors in the garden.

I had my tripod in the car, but didn't feel like carrying it in the afternoon sun.

5April13 : Upgrading from the Canon 70-200 f/4L to the 70-200 f/2.8L IS lens: picked up the latter at the post office after lunch.
Had to pick up our taxes in Bountiful, about 30mi north. Headed that way after picking up the lens.
Wanted to see if the Yellow Headed Blackbird and Great tailed Grackle were at the swamp in Grantsville, UT, about 30mi SW of Bountiful.
So, I shot with a used 70-200 f/2.8L IS, some with a 1.4TC, some without. All hand held. Mixed results.
The good news is that the birds are there, though at first I saw none. They're skittish, early arrivers maybe.
I also spotted two pair of Black Necked Stilts, a pair of Killdeer, a few ducks, and a lone Canadian goose. afm5Apr13

USU State Math Contest 2013 : 11-March-2013, the day after we set our clocks ahead, we had to meet at school at 6am to take a 2 hour bus ride to Logan, UT for the state math contest. Musa T., Tyler B., Ashley C., Solomone F., Javier C., and Jairo S were the brave souls who made it to school and onto the bus by 6. We picked up Olympus, then Skyline HS, and headed north.

Night Sky 5d3 : Night sky taken with a 5d3.

19Oct12: Fall recess, so at 5am I was on my way up to Brighton/Guadsman's Pass to shoot the Milky Way and maybe catch a few meteors in the process. It didn't seem cold, but after an hour my fingers were numb. I saw one meteor on the drive up. I didn't see any of the ones caught in these pictures. I found them when I got the images into LR4.2.

2012 nature : Wild things in the area.

There are pictures of a Belted Kingfisher fishing, or rather, grabbing bullfrog tadpoles. My bird book has this to say about that:
"This kingfisher's loud and far carrying rattles are heard more often than the bird is seen. Interestingly, it is one of the few birds
in North America in which the female is more colorful than the male... Plunge-dives from branches or wires to catch a wide variety
of fish near the surface, including sticklebacks and trout; also takes crustaceans, such as crayfish."

Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge : Yesterday, at Antelope Island, our guide at the bison pen told me there were Tundra Swan coming in to the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge, and that the peak would be around 40,000 by Thanksgiving. He mentioned that Northern Harrier Hawks were also in abundance there. This morning, around 5am (MST), I left for exit #363 on I-15, Forrest Ave. I arrived before sunrise, drove in and around once, and did the loop a 2nd time just for good measure. There were Tundra Swan. There were Northern Harrier hawks. It was a fun 6 hour trip. I got back in time to help finish raking and bagging the leaves in the yard.
