Cemetery - Stones : I know that most of you love the statues, but my favorite subject is the stone. They, like the statues, can be expressive in so many ways.
BTW, I'm in the midst of reprocessing my work; especially the older Olympus shots. Many of them can never be recaptured, so I'm doing the best I can to get them in line with my current creative wishes.

St. Joseph Mt. Morah Cemetery : Established in 1851 it is the oldest operating cemetery in Saint Joseph, MO. and is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It is known for its fine tomb architecture. "Mausoleum Row" represents some of the economic and social elite of this city. Three MO. governors, M. Jeff Thompson, "The Swamp Fox" of the Confederacy, two Pony Express riders and two of Quantrill's Raiders are among the famous buried here.

Green-Wood Cemetery : "If the dead can come back to this earth and flit unseen around those they loved, I shall always be near you; in the garish day and in the darkest night-amidst your happiest scenes and gloomiest hours; always, always; and if there be a soft breeze upon your cheek, it shall be my breath; or the cool air fans your throbbing temple, it shall be my spirit passing by."
(Sullivan Ballou)

Ferndale Cemetery : In September 2009 I visited Ferndale Cemetery in Ferndale, CA. It is a fascinating cemetery in several different ways. First, it is the more-or-less typical 19th century cemetery where the town's early settlers and founding fathers are at rest, and thus provides a vivid connection to history. Second, because it was established on such steeply sloping terrain, it presents a very unusual aspect as well as (for those hardy enough to make their way to the top of the hill) spectacular views of the city and surrounding countryside. Third, in dramatic contrast to the Victorian mourning conventions of the 19th century graves, newer graves in the cemetery show us a completely different perspective on grief and commemoration rituals--highly personal, informal, homemade, cluttered and messy, and unique. I like cemeteries, although I am no expert, and visit as many as I can. I'm sure I have never seen a collection of graves quite like these.
