Lake View Cemetery, Cleveland : "The Lake View Cemetery was modeled after the great garden cemeteries of Victorian England and France. It was developed in 1869 5 miles from town in a rural arboretum setting and designed to integrate landscapes with memorial sculpture and architecture." One of two most prominent features is the Garfield Monument. " Designed by architect George Keller, the Garfield Monument was dedicated on Memorial Day, 1890. The Garfield Monument stands 180 feet tall and is constructed of Berea Sandstone. Around the exterior of the balcony are five, terra cotta panels by Casper Bubel, with over 110 figures all life size, depicting Garfield’s life and death. The panels include Garfield as a teacher, as Major General in the Civil War, an orator, taking the oath of office and laying in state in the rotunda of the Capital in Washington DC."

New Burlington Cemetery - Clinton County, Ohio : Rural Cemeteries of Southwest Ohio series, Gallery #7, New Burlington Cemetery, Jenkins Graveyard, Chester Township, Ohio. This was, by far, the largest of the rural cemeteries that I photographed for this series. It was perhaps the most recent and well kept of the lot as well. That being said, what made this one stick out for me was the diversity of the grave markers. The most imposing was the more recent black granite veterans memorial marker that immediately drew one's attention as it sat prominently near the entrance. Contemporary stones (which tend not to draw the focus of my camera) were scattered about and many were adjacent to older, well-weathered, lichen-covered stones that have stood the test of time still honoring loved ones who had long since passed. The markers that I've found draw most of my attention are those that are so old and worn that they remain as only a portion of their original size or that stand crooked and tilted within a row that likely long ago was straight and erect. And there are the stones which mark the lives of those who have been gone well over a century and yet continue to be remembered for their brave service to their country. Perhaps the long-lasting simple tributes of remembrance are some of the things which make cemeteries so special to me.

Woodland Cemetery - Winter : For all the times I have photographed this cemetery, this is the first significant endeavor to capture it in the dead of winter. Here is Woodland Cemetery after a new-fallen March snow in Dayton, Ohio. Here you'll find the grave markers for such notables as the Wright Brothers, Paul Laurence Dunbar and Erma Bombeck.

Zoar Church Cemetery - Greene County, Ohio : Gallery #5 in my Rural Cemeteries of Southwest Ohio series takes us to Zoar Church Cemetery in Greene County, Ohio. It can be found just along the roadside, yet it was quite secluded. On a hillside rising behind a small white-framed United Methodist church, this sparse cemetery held my attention for a good little while. I was attracted to the manner in which the grave markers sat on the hill in relationship to the other stones and trees. Straight and erect markers were not to be found, but it added to the character of this old cemetery dating to the early 1800's.
