Cities > popular all-time > The Edwin H. Gott in the Ship Canal; Duluth, Minnesota

These 1000 foot lake boats were designed to fit the Poe Lock at the Soo. They are massive, powerful, and slightly less pretty than a cement block. But when they loom out of frost smoke, they're very impressive and even mysterious.

The locks at Sault Saint Marie, Michigan and Ontario, closed for the season on Thursday, January 15. The Edgar B. Speer and Edwin H. Gott were the last Lakers to arrive in Duluth for winter lay-up on Friday, January 16, 2009. They had quite a fight with ice and arrived better than two days late.

The Edwin H. Gott was launched in 1978 and is 1004 feet long. For more information: http://www.boatnerd.com/pictures/fleet/gott.htm
Cities > popular all-time > Shore Ice; Duluth, Minnesota

Ice sheets are pushed around Lake Superior by the wind. Sometimes they pile up on shore.

Cities > popular all-time > Night Rain; Minneapolis, Minnesota

Sometimes a photo is real close to home. I took this one from my balcony. And I was grateful that I hadn't gone looking for night shots. I like shooting in bad weather, but photography at night and in a downpour would be a bit much.
Cities > popular all-time > January Twilight: Saint Paul and Ramsey County Courthouse; Saint Paul, Minnesota

The Ramsey County Courthouse was completed in 1932. The original tower is a perfect example of American Art Deco. This is a splendid building inside and out. I hope to get some interior photos at some point. The steam plume comes from the District Heating Plant. And yes, it takes a cold evening to get a good steam plume.
Cities > popular all-time > Elevator Shaft, Jax Building; Saint Paul, Minnesota

This old cage elevator is in the Jax Building in downtown Saint Paul. Judging by the dust, it's not used very much. I held the camera over the top of the wire screen and took the photo.

Cities > popular all-time > Cathedral of Saint Paul; Saint Paul, Minnesota

The Cathedral of Saint Paul is one of Saint Paul's greatest landmarks. It looks out over downtown with a monumental presence. The church was the child of Archbishop John Ireland and architect Emmanuel Manqueray. Construction took eight years and the building was dedicated in 1915. Interior work continued through the 1930's. A very expensive exterior restoration ran 2001 to 2003. It included tuckpointing the granite facades and sheathing the central dome in 100,000 square feet of copper.
Cities > popular all-time > Band Shell Benches, Minnehaha Park; Minneapolis, Minnesota

Early morning fog turned Minnehaha Park into a ghostly and moody place. It would have been nice to have one person sitting on a bench, but that wasn't an option. So a cardboard box had to do.
