Ice sheets are pushed around Lake Superior by the wind. Sometimes they pile up on shore.
Cities > popular all-time > Elevator Shaft, Jax Building; Saint Paul, Minnesota

This old cage elevator is in the Jax Building in downtown Saint Paul. Judging by the dust, it's not used very much. I held the camera over the top of the wire screen and took the photo.
Cities > popular all-time > The Edgar B. Speer in the Ship Canal; Duluth, Minnesota

These 1000 foot lake boats were designed to fit the Poe Lock at the Soo. They are massive, powerful, and slightly less pretty than a cement block. But when they loom out of frost smoke, they're very impressive and even mysterious.

The locks at Sault Saint Marie, Michigan and Ontario closed for the season on Thursday, January 15. The Edgar B. Speer and Edwin H. Gott were the last Lakers to arrive in Duluth for winter lay-up on Friday, January 16, 2009. They had quite a fight with ice and arrived better than two days late.

The Edgar B. Speer is 1004 feet long and was launched in 1980. For more information: http://www.boatnerd.com/pictures/fleet/speer.htm
Cities > popular all-time > Cathedral of Saint Paul; Saint Paul, Minnesota

The Cathedral of Saint Paul is one of Saint Paul's greatest landmarks. It looks out over downtown with a monumental presence. The church was the child of Archbishop John Ireland and architect Emmanuel Manqueray. Construction took eight years and the building was dedicated in 1915. Interior work continued through the 1930's. A very expensive exterior restoration ran 2001 to 2003. It included tuckpointing the granite facades and sheathing the central dome in 100,000 square feet of copper.

Cities > popular all-time > Boom Island Footbridge; Minneapolis, Minnesota

An island no more, Boom Island took its name from the log boom that used to span the Mississippi River. The boom caught saw logs that were floated down the Mississippi. These logs were sorted and then cut into lumber by the various saw mills. The 1893 Fire destroyed the saw mills and then the Wisconsin Central Railroad moved in to build a roundhouse and freight yard. This old truss bridge crosses a channel between Boom and Nicollet Islands. It's about all that is left of the railroad days.
Cities > popular all-time > Frost Smoke and the Ship Canal Piers; Duluth, Minnesota

Frost smoke is caused by cold dry winter air flowing over much warmer water. In this instance, the water was close to freezing, while the air temperature was minus twenty Fahrenheit.
Cities > popular all-time > Woman and Bike in Heavy Snow; Minneapolis, Minnesota

Lots of folks don't want to have their photo taken by a stranger. This woman didn't object at all. In fact, she hammed it up a little bit.
Cities > popular all-time > Saint Anthony Falls in High Water; Minneapolis, Minnesota

This is the highest spring flow we've seen on the Mississippi for some while. It's not close to flood stage here, but it's still pretty impressive. Note that the lock on the left has been turned into a spillway to divert flow away from the falls.
