Cities > popular all-time > Mickey's Diner at Night; Saint Paul, Minnesota

Ah, Mickey's... It's been St. Paul's favorite greasy spoon for many years. The dining car was built in 1937 by the Jerry O' Mahony Company in New Jersey. The car was shipped to St. Paul and opened for business on this same spot in 1939. It has been resisting the march of time and urban renewal efforts ever since. By the bye, it's not a real railroad car. But it is on the National Register of Historic Places. http://www.mickeysdiningcar.com/

Cities > popular all-time > Minnehaha Parkway and the Nicollet Avenue Bridge in Snow; Minneapolis, Minnesota

I saw this view in my car's rearview mirror. Shot a few images with cars on the road, but this is the one I like best. It's quieter and it reminds me of someplace I can't quite remember.
Cities > popular all-time > Towboats at Lambert's Landing; Saint Paul, Minnesota

The Midland and the Jane G. Huffman are rafted together behind the J.W. Hershey at Lambert's Landing. The fog-shrouded Robert Street Bridge is just visible in the background.

Saint Paul is the historic head of navigation on the Mississippi River. A great deal of industry has flourished here. Most recently, there were several grain elevators and a coal-fired power plant along the city's waterfront. During harvest season, towboats and their barges would haul coal upriver for the power plant and take grain south. it was common to see several towboats moored at Lambert's Landing (aka The Lower Landing). The elevators are nearly all gone now. The coal-fired power plant was torn down this year (2009). So catching three towboats at the same time is a rare thing these days.
Cities > popular all-time > Christmas Lights: Rice Park and the Landmark Center

Every year Saint Paul lights up its downtown parks with trees full of Christmas Lights. Everybody loves them and no wonder. The effect is magical. I've been trying to get these lights since Thanksgiving, but it's always been too windy, or I've been gone, or I've been sick. Tonight I managed a few. The lights will be up into February, so maybe I'll get a few more shots.

The Landmark Center is the old U.S. Post Office and Federal Courts Building. It was completed in 1902 and declared government surplus in 1969. The building was days away from being razed when it was saved. It's one of Saint Paul's architectural jewels.

Cities > popular all-time > Early Morning: Wabasha Street Bridge; Saint Paul, Minnesota

I took this early on a warm Labor Day weekend morning in 2007. It's a bit historic since the bridge is no longer illuminated.
