Symphony more than doubles education programming for children and the community-at-large; strives to meet financial challenges
Honolulu – The Honolulu Symphony today announced that it has rescheduled the upcoming Honolulu Symphony Toyota Pops concerts with smooth jazz star Dave Koz to a new date and exciting location: Saturday, May 23, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. at the Waikiki Shell. Symphony Pops fans will now enjoy the popular, outdoor location of the Shell combined with a fantastic new show with Dave Koz – making this concert the must-see show for May.

The Symphony is also proud to announce that it more than doubled education programming for children and the community-at-large in 2007 and 2008. Programs included free, family-friendly concerts; training for classroom teachers; and hundreds of performances in schools on the Islands of Maui, Hawaii, Oahu and Kauai.

The Board of Directors of the Honolulu Symphony recently launched a special campaign to raise funds over the holiday season. The “Honolulu Symphony: A Wise Investment” campaign challenges local businesses to invest in the Symphony and support this resource for future generations.

“During tough economic times, everyone must fight to keep Symphony programming in our schools and communities because these programs have a particularly positive impact on the lives of all people, especially children,” said Tom Gulick, executive director, Honolulu Symphony.

“Today, too few people in the community fully appreciate the benefits that a large-scale, symphony orchestra brings to the State,” said Gulick. “The Symphony offers people of all ages and walks of life dozens of accessible opportunities throughout the year to learn more about music in a welcoming environment. In addition, music education teaches children teamwork, discipline and craftsmanship – and inspires them to achieve their goals. As a tourist attraction and business development anchor, the Symphony contributes significantly to the State’s economy and improves its ability to attract potential businesses, investors and entrepreneurs to the Islands.”

Symphony education and community outreach programs impact more than 20,000 children, teachers and adults each year with high-quality, inspirational programming. Each year, these programs include:

* More than 50 free performances in the classrooms and cafeterias of schools.
* More than 10 free, large-scale concerts that are developed for people of all ages and levels of music knowledge, including concerts featuring the Honolulu Symphony Chorus (Oahu Choral Society). These concerts reach seniors from retirement and assisted living communities; families with young children; and hundreds of individuals who have never experienced the music of a live symphony orchestra.
* More than 25 education concerts for school groups and performed in concert halls.
* Free professional development training for teachers.
* A community relations program working with military service men and women, as well as military families, to introduce them to the experience of Symphony concerts, free-of-charge.

In fall 2008, new Symphony programming included:

* The first education tour of the Island of Kauai in 15 years, including more than a dozen performances in schools and four free community concerts.
* The launch of a new music education program at Nānākuli Elementary in Waianae, where all 4th, 5th and 6th grade students – more than 190 children – now have access to regular music lessons with Symphony musicians and staff.

“This organization has significantly increased community enrichment programs despite the faltering economy and this success is due in large part to the dedication of the musicians of the Orchestra and Chorus, as well as volunteers,” continued Gulick. “The strength of our volunteer base and commitment of the musicians – and their belief in investing in the Symphony – has made the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra and Chorus a truly vital community resource.”
