06/24/10 - Flaming Sun I stopped by the Garden Hut yesterday morning for a few minutes. They have some sunflowers growing out front, and I wanted to try to take a few pictures of them especially since they had about 5 different pretty varieties to enjoy. This is my favorite of the pics that I took. Something about the colors and light coming through the reddish petals. I removed a hint of another flower in the far lower left, but otherwise it's unedited. We're gonna break a record at 101 today. Yep, you read that right...Raleigh is gonna have record heat today. We've been near 100 certainly with a head index of 100 for 3 days already. Whew! I haven't been out in that heat too much. You basically walk out the door and melt at those temps here with the super high humidity. But I love Raleigh weather and this too will pass. We did get a brief sprinkle yesterday afternoon for a welcome and quick 15 degree cool down. Thanks for your comments on the Queen Anne's Lace shot from yesterday:-) HAGD, Maryann
September 7 2010 Chicago is My Kind of Town In this night skyline shot you can see the Chicago River in the center, the famous S-Curve of Lake Shore Drive near the bottom and Monroe Harbor in the distance to the left. I shot this looking South East from th 31st floor of Lake Point Tower. Thank you so much for making my Raining Fire picture #1 yesterday. I was fascinated by the observation that it reminded some people of a weeping willow tree.
This is some type of Gecko. My husband and my Mom, yep, that's right my Mom and I went to the reptile show in Cleveland. I have been wanting a "Red Eyed Tree Frog" for a long time but didn't expect to find on there but was pleasantly surprised. There are so many fascinating critters there and lots of fun taking pictures of them. Most of the sellers don't seem to mind. I will probably go again next month since my grandson Gregory seen Lucy he wants to go.
smile pretty for the camera
Inside the TicToc Diner - The TicToc Diner in Lake City, CO, is one of only a few surviving diners called Valentine Diners, which were ordered from a catalog. Today was the day when I could have gotten the shot of a lifetime, but didn't. After our father's day breakfast at I-Hop, we decided to take a drive over to the Woodland Park area in our old restored 1975 Porsche 911. Apparently, everyone else in Colorado Springs had the same idea because traffic was incredibly heavy, although moving along at a fast clip. We're tooling along at about sixty miles an hour and I have my camera in my hand, when out of the corner of my eye I see these big brown shapes. I swivel my head to look and realize I'm looking at two large brown bears....eating on grass or some other plant. They looked incredibly cute and rolly polly. There was no shoulder on which to stop and the traffic was so thick that it was impossible to stop. I was sick about it. By the time we got back around, they were gone. Oh, well, c'est la vie!

8-08: This was taken in front of a restaraunt along Harmony road in Fort Collins after dinner on our way to a movie. I drive by this little waterfall display every day on my way home from work and I've wanted to take some pictures here.
14.11.08 - Escapism Some days drive you mad, and then there was today! What could go wrong did go wrong, and what didn't go wrong didn't matter anyway. For the fifth week running my courier messed up and my brain exploded. I'm normally such a placid, philosophical and pragmatic guy, but repeated incompetence sometimes needs a rant to get the message across. Next Friday will tell whether or not the rant was worth it, I wait with baited breath. You will have noticed from past Dailies that when I'm really p****d off I retreat into my head and beautiful high mountains. This is one of my favourite places, it has featured here before, but this is a new panoramic image that I created this evening to cheer myself up. This is Taweche Towers, at about 18,000', looking south across the Khumbu Valley in Nepal. Mount Everest is back over my left shoulder. Considerably less people have stood on the summit of Taweche Towers than have summitted Everest itself, this is a magical place. I wish I could take you all there. And yes, I'm feeling much better now thanks :)
June 30th YOU'RE ONE IN A MILLION My first attempt at selective coloring! What fun! Three tries and two hours...not bad for a beginner :-) Here's the unframed version for those that don't like the added dimension: http://Mom4squirrels.smugmug.com/gallery/2452453_zuNLx#322255038_Fzncz Today is our 7th anniversary... This one is for you honey, because you ARE "one in a million!"
3rd year Pic 075 - Oct 08 2010 Glasses BEST SEEN IN LARGE SIZE While having lunch at Paantya, a multi-cuisine restaurant at Shiv Nivas palace, I noticed the glasses on the next table... they reflected the ground and buidlings one floor below. Required quite a bit of 'cleaning' as it was raining and the window was splattered with drops. http://www.eternalmewar.in/User/Travel/Hotels/Grand_Heritage/Shiv_Niwas/index.aspx
1.03.10 - Back Light At the end of a busy day I was just winding down. I'd visited my last two customers and had just driven into the car park at my local shops. The sky was dark and heavy, then suddenly the sun dropped below the bank of cloud and sat there just above the horizon. From the shops it was some way off to the right of the cathedral, but I knew if I could get to the quarry quickly I could find a viewpoint were the sun would be directly behind it. Luckily the quarry was only a few hundred yards away, and I just got there in time to catch this!
24.3.09 - "Tennyson" I've been given permission to publish a couple of my Tennyson photos from the weekend, which is cool because I'd got a day behind and it allows me to catch up. This is actor Ben Poole as the poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson. It is one of my favourite images from the shoot because it took so long to get right :) More info on the project here; http://www.theladyofshalott.co.uk/index.html
06/15/10 - Halloween Pennant Up the gravel road from my normal swamp area, soy beans are planted on both sides of the field. They clean up the edges of the road every few years, and then various plants start to grow back like bushy sweet gum trees where song birds nest, Queen Anne's Lace, and soon morning glories. There are always a lot of sticks in this area, and this time of year, there always seem to be a lot of Halloween Pennant dragonflies perching on them. I guess this variety is suited to a slightly less wet area because there's not much water in this location. At any point, this guy hung out on the perch for quite some time, and I took a bunch of pics of him. I have cropped this just a bit to 8X10 size, but otherwise it is SOOC from my S3. I chose this one for the green background tones and detail. I also took some pics with Dad's 40D and a borrowed Canon 300mm lens. You may remember that I was not satisfied at all with the pics from the camera/Tamron lens. Here is the best from that camera: http://fotomom.smugmug.com/Nature/June-2010/12400102_x8pU2#901480267_UkdAa The detail is about the same or not as good IMO, and I just didn't compose the shot at an angle to get the green background. Instead, I got brown. Great for a science journal but not necessarily as a POTD. Anyway, I hope you enjoy. I really must find some new varieties maybe at a new spot. The only variety that I haven't shown yet this year that I've seen in my usual spot is an Emerald. In other news, Dad is finally leaving rehab tomorrow. He's excited. I am a bit concerned but hoping he will do well. He went back to the heart doctor who said that his heart had gotten stronger since the test in the ER that had us all so worried. Hopefully Dad will stay strong and be able to enjoy some of his normal activities like trips to the library and meeting a friend for chess or a movie. Also, Madi's Dad, Danny, was handed a builders magazine yesterday and was flipping threw it and saw a picture I took at the Museum of Life and Science about a year and a half ago where Madi and Johnny are running down their wetlands boardwalk. I had given the museum permission to use the picture and had sent them the original at one point. I knew they had used it on tent cards at the museum, but I didn't know about the magazine layout. How cool is that! Madi holding up the magazine for me: http://fotomom.smugmug.com/Nature/June-2010/12400102_x8pU2#901690135_Vp9ic I need to try to find a couple of other copies of that magazine! This classic Ford truck is really red, but I was experimenting with PP - just playing around really. But I kind of liked this effect. I particularly liked the reflections of the Mustang in the side, the grass in the wheels and the understated color of this beauty.
