Tuesday, July 17, 2012 "AFFECTION" "Horse sense is the thing a horse has which keeps it from betting on people." ~ W.C. Fields Update: After reading Wilma's comment, I changed the caption from "Bonding" to "Affection." Thanks for the inspiration, Wilma! I am told that horses are extrememly affectionate and that when a horse gently brings its head even slightly in your direction, it is a sign of affection and acknowledgement.........such was the case here. You all know that I rarerly post "people shots," but I was walking by and spotted this scene and thought, "photo opp and future daily post." I was hoping she wouldn't leave before I was able to get my camera out of its bag and capture the moment. Thanks for your comments and have a terrific Tuesday. Mehendi hands (Best seen in Large or Original size) Beside geometrical figures & flowers, the design includes an Elephant and two human faces. At times the name of the groom is also written (hidden) which he has to find out later on! This kind of detailed design would take 3-5 hours (hands & legs)! for reference check the earlier two photos: http://hershy.smugmug.com/gallery/4836391_ACj8A/1/271804178_q2CWc/Medium http://hershy.smugmug.com/gallery/4836391_ACj8A/1/270314185_g8p5k/Medium for more info on Mehendi http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mehndi www.javeri.net
Under the Bridge, Columbia MO We were back at Grindstone Nature Area yesterday to take some photos of our friends' dogs. Big Red had to stay home and rest his recently broken toenail :( I'm taking photos of this bridge almost every time we go now, as long as there is a good sky and the water is still. The creek widens out here, so it's a great place to practice taking reflection photos. UPDATE: Here is the link to the new smugmug layout that is coming soon. You can see how your galleries will look by clicking "join." You'll notice there are NO THUMBS! The Dock Before Sunrise, Bayview TX I woke up in time for the blue hour before sunrise despite having only four hours of sleep that night, and driving 14 hours on very little sleep the day before. It was worth it. There was one burst of clouds on the horizon and they were well placed at the end of the dock I had access to. There was very little wind and the water was calm. The blue hour was already underway when I arrived and the sunrise colors were starting to trickle across the horizon. Mother Nature was not going to be out-shined by the fireworks the night before. This is a single 43 second exposure. I used a circular polarizer to increase the glare on the water so that it would be more reflective and so that the exposure of the water would more closely match the exposure of the sky. I had trouble focusing in the dark so I did not want to go below f/11 and risk having some of the dock out of focus. I had to take several shots and check the focus by zooming in on my LCD screen. When a 30 second exposure was still too dark, I went to bulb mode so I could hold the trigger down for as long as I needed. I used my other camera as a timer to help me time the shots. For a 60 second exposure I held the trigger down while firing two 30 second exposures on my other camera. This was probably supposed to be a 40 second exposure but I held the trigger three seconds too long. Bulb mode is never an exact science. Lastly, I started out shooting at 17mm, which really stretched the dock into the horizon and squashed the clouds. I've been pushing myself to stop shooting exclusively at 17mm and it paid off this time. Switching to 40mm compressed the frame by making the clouds appear closer and taller, and I think it created a more dramatic photo. I really like the long exposure effect on the water and I have been longing to try this technique on a dock since we went to Andaman Islands India back in early January. I captured this moonset photo the morning the moon was it's closest to the earth in the past 18 years, March 19 2010. The sun still had not risen, so, the light you see in the clouds and reflected on the ocean was from the incredibly bright full moon as it was setting over the Pacific Ocean. We've had virtually non-stop rain over the past week, and this morning was no different - so I was lucky the moon peeked out of the clouds just a bit to add some mystical moonlight to the ocean and clouds.
Sunday, December 30, 2012 "LIGHTS AND REFLECTIONS" "How much you climb up the mountain is just as important as how you get down the mountain. And so it is with life, which, for many of us becomes one big gigantic test followed by one big gigantic lesson. In the end, it all comes down to one word.....grace. It's how you accept winning and losing, good luck and bad luck, the darkness and the light." ~ Philosophy SOOC, other than the frames, which were created with Picnik. Unfortunately, the picnik is over. As announced earlier, Picnik closed on April 19, 2012. Curious Giraffe - Photographed at the Cheyenne Mt. Zoo in Colorado Springs. In my opinion, the giraffe enclosure at the zoo is one of the most interesting to visitors, as you can purchase crackers from a vending machine and feed them to the giraffes. You are right at the level of their heads, so it is a neat perspective. It is a large area and the zoo has a lot of giraffes, young and old. This fella was hoping for a cracker and wanted to check out my camera. It it 11:00 p.m. and I just got home from shooting the wedding. I'm anxious to look at all the hundreds of shots I took, but not tonight...just too tired. Hope everyone has a good day...we're going to the annual Parade of Homes. It is always lots of fun to look at the houses and furnishings. Taken with a fisheye 10mm lens.
3rd year Pic 284 - Jul 20 2011 Sparks Kumbharwada, Mumbai Kumbhar-wada: Kumbhar means a potter in many Indian languages and wada means an area. What's going on over there? This is another image from the photoshoot last week. I think I created six different versions of it. I'm not sure which one I prefer. If you'd like to check out the others, they are here: http://fotoeffects.smugmug.com/gallery/9105046_ZAAtf#606886760_Ya8PB Thanks for all the nice comments on the photo of the gloriosa daisy and the red bug. I was surprised with all the nice comments, as it just seemed like a pretty ordinary shot to me...although I did think the bug made it a bit different. I've spent the whole day processing shots from a wedding I shot last weekend and I'm not even half done. Oh, well, perseverance will allow me to get them done one day soon. Have a great day, everyone!
June 23, 2010 These Mimosa blooms look so wispy and fragile, but the trees I think are very hardy. This is best viewed in the larger formats. Today was just another day of not much time to take shots, but I wanted to play some more with my new macro lens, so this is the best I could do for today in a very little bit of time that I had to "play". Thanks to all of you for your comments on my last couple of days of daily shots. They are much appreciated. I am just amazed at the talents of our Smug Mug family. I can get lost in the galleries for hours - if only I just had hours to spare. Have a great evening. Linda
Here I come! Well, you knew this was coming didn't ya? Lucy had to get her turn.
