Butterfly - Jun 3 2009

I was shooting roses today when all of a sudden 7 butterfies drew my attention. They seemed particularly fond of these tiny pinkish red flowers... and were not disturbed by my presence. I had a good 150 shots of them in less than 10 minutes. I like this shot because of the neat details on the head.

Month #23 - Retrospective of Daily Photos posted from 5/04 to 12/09 (most viewers for the month)

About this time (2005-6) I was competing and needed images in three different categories. One was "enhanced prints" and I came up with this technique that I called Out-of-Frame. It served me well during the competition year. Here's a gallery of images with this technique - http://www.pbase.com/ed_k/out_of_frame - where if you click on the gallery's 1st image, you can see a "How-To" series. Here's what I wrote in 3/06 -

This will be the scene at the Virginia state arboretum in a few weeks. I'm still fooling around trying to come up with a good "enhanced" competition image. I prefer not to alter the basic image and so have settled on this out-of-frame technique as a compromise - fanciful cropping by overlaying a border over the bottom of the original image and erasing the parts of the border that cover the out-of-frame branch. Complete the project by extending the canvas on the remaining three sides and placing a border around the inside of the canvas to give it a 3-d mat look. Oh - and I placed a very soft and subtle "shadow" over the bottom "mat" to match the overhanging branch. This may be one for competition.

~~Fogged and dreary rising;
the weather's disagreeable too.
Awake too late, eyes open, scrutinizing sleep.
Fatigued, not tired. Why? I haven't a clue.
Seldom works, that senseless habit, enumerating sheep.
Adding insult to injury, I believe I dreamt, a ewe?

What a bizarre way to begin one's day;
much less, stretched across two.

Weather guys preach prediction;
Nay, they ALERT, ADVISE, and WARN,
more wintry white stuff approaches.
Alas, my view only precipitates scorn.

Cold rain, go away!
To you, I've no more to say. ~~

As you can see, the white stuff did make an appearance, a brief, gray, and wet one; so I added my own touch of surreality, by boosting the color to the max. Would have needed a bigger box of Crayolas to get any more out of this one, the file was just too lax.

Thanks for the words on the box turtle carapace. I have another one waiting in the wings; still life insurance for a different rainy day. Donna asked, "So, just what DO turtles pine for?" I don't know, but I'm willing to wager it's not lying on their backs counting sheep, stars, or snowflakes. :D

Finally, as a few have undoubtedly noticed by now, I made a commitment to myself at the beginning of the year to expand my vocabulary and advance my creative(?) writing skills. Both had taken a turn for the worse quite some time ago, along with proper punctuation, grammar and, most critical, thought. Oddly enough, this world of brevity we now live in, with Facebook, Twitter, SmugMug, and so on, is where I happen to spend most of my writing time. It sort of goes against everything these sites were designed for; so excuse the long-winded captions, comments and silly prose. It's just my way of expanding what I knows. Of course I take none of this too seriously, just like my photos, and anything I put out is open to comment, criticism, or cajolery.
3-6-2010…  Little Escar…

My last shot of Escar was back in October ‘09, when heavy rains drove it out of its home… There has been some recent interest in snail shots, the rains have returned, and I thought I’d take out Escar for another photo session… Go, Escar Go!!!

Escar recently has been seeing Garlic Butter, they appear to be going well together…
15.04.12 - Distant Impressions

Every now and again people ask me why I call my photographic business "Light and Dreams Photography". It is difficult to express in a few words, but this image sums it up. For me photography is all about the light, and trying to create dreams with it, which sounds very pretentious, but it is how I feel in my heart. Most of the time this isn't possible, you can only do so much with the conditions at the time, and my skills aren't enough to make something beautiful every time I click the shutter, unlike the photographers I aspire to. But yesterday evening the light was absolutely magical, which made things a lot easier :)

This is more or less the reverse shot to yesterday's Daily, but a totally different perspective of course. I actually took about 90 photos while walking the dog, but most were very similar as I tried to catch the golden glow of the low sunlight on the oilseed rape fields. I've made a small gallery from the walk here;

Foggy Path, September 18, 2011

Photo Taken in the Craggy Gardens, in the Blue Ridge mountains of NC. (Between Mt. Mitchell and Asheville). Elevation approx. 5,500. This Trail is approximately 1.5 miles long and can be accessed from the Blue Ridge parkway. This path does have a kind of spooky quality about it with its tunnels of Rhododendrons and thick jagged brush. Fog really adds to the effect.

Thanks so much for the very generous comments from so many great photographers here on Smugmug

Autumn - November 2, 2011

 Thanks so much for all the very generous comments on "The Grid" photo yesterday. It was posted a couple of times before only to be ripped down by the "Snake" . Looks like it wouldn't die after all. It is one of my personal favorites as many things came together to get the shot. As it turned out I was trying to shoot blue jays on a fence when these black birds showed up everywhere. The background is a building with a corrugated siding which add the lines. The background colors near the bottom are from rust and mud. I added a graduated filter in processing to the top to give it some extra pop. Everything else was straight from the camera.

 Thanks again so much from a great community of photographers.
