CRABAPPLES IN THE SNOWSTORM

With temperatures plummeting
and more snow on the way,
I added a little color
to brighten this cold, cold, winter day...

Hope you're staying warm...and feeding the birds AND squirrels... :-)
DailyPhotos > popular today > 12/03/09 - Red and Gold
In the after Christmas sales last year, I picked up 3 boxes of various textured red bulbs with the thought that I'd use them for a picture. So, last night I decided it was time to see what I could do with them. I got out my new 16X20 mirror and the bulbs and a few other things and set out to make an arrangement that might be pretty. I used tape to hold some of the bulbs in place and had things set up enough to start taking pictures. I started off with a red light bulb...yuck...just a tinted red picture. So, I switched to soft white...not perfect but better. A few pictures in, as I was moving the light around, it came down on top of the mirror and broke it. Sigh... Joey was there, and I actually managed to keep my cool. In the scheme of things, it was such a small thing, but I was bummed. I turned the mirror around to hide the broken off corner, rearranged, and we kept on taking pics. I sent Joey to bed after he took a few shots and then was back and forth several times, taking pictures, looking on the computer, frowning, and then back for more pictures. Finally I stopped...it was as good as it was going to get and I was tired.

Of course then it was time to play in PSE and PhotoFrame to see what I could finish with. I tried lots of versions, but so far, I like this one best. If I could just figure out how to sprinkle some gold sparkles on the frame I think I'd be happy with it.

I really must get outside today since the sun is out and take an 'easy' picture today:-)

RE our Christmas cards. It will be the Santa Paws one with the whole family and our dog Blaze taken at the SPCA (not by me). I'll see if I can scan one in today to show you tomorrow. But, I agree, yesterday's shot would make a great card.

HAGD,
Maryann

Late note: I'm kindof excited. I went back and created this using two of the photos from last night:

Maybe the inset should be an oval or a different frame or? The possibilities are endless.

Just a rose to forget all the dark things...
DailyPhotos > popular today > Dec 3rd - "Aspens" - I always wanted to try my hand at one of those B/W Aspen tree shots . . . . so while in the Flagstaff area last week I had my chance.

This shot is sort of for LadyKate. She posted a wing shot, which I had ALMOST done for yesterday's daily. So instead I post it today in honor of my friend and yours, our own LadyKate! This is a closeup wing shot of another macaw (not the one you saw for yesterday's). The colors on these guys is what draws me -- I love color, and the flamboyance of these birds very much appeals to me.

DailyPhotos > popular today > December 3, 2009 - "Rain"

This snow photo was taken Wednesday morning after the weather forecast for "rain" Wednesday. We still have not seen our first frost this fall. This North Texas morning surprise was gone in about one hour.

I guess it is time for me to pull out the annual flower plants that are still blooming :)

DailyPhoto 12-03-2009

Another one of my(Dan) shots of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse from our trip there last Sunday. I shot this in 3- bracket exposure thinking HDR treatment, but when I saw the 0 EV shot, I figured HDR just wasn’t going to improve it all that much so I played it straight from the camera with only a small crop and a slight color tweak.

Wow, thanks for all the really nice comments about Patti’s egret shot yesterday. We were both about as much surprised as to the reaction it generated here as we were when we first saw the unusual shot. Glad everyone enjoyed it.
DailyPhotos > popular today > "Cattle Egrets"
Day 275, Thursday, December 3

Cattle Egrets are extremely common in Florida.

They have experienced one of the fasting expansions recently seen in the bird world..... expanding from Spain to Africa, around 1900, to Central America and arriving in North America in 1941. Then colonizing all of Mexico and much of the southern United States.

Although it forages, bathes and nest mostly, but not always, in Wetlands... it is seen mostly in grasslands and farm fields. They eat the insects disturbed by farm machinery, horses and cattle.... as they follow close behind....thus earning the name, Cattle Egrets.

Fill your screen... so, view at X2,
Norm
