DailyPhotos > popular today > Dec 31: Final sunset of 08
I went down to the river to capture the sunset and to play with some Cokin filters I got. This is the result of those shots. I used a combination of 2 filters to capture this effect and to mirror the effect on the water. I darkened the beach in CS as the ugly brown broken ground detracted from the shot.

DailyPhotos > popular today > The sun is reflected in water droplets on fir tree needles; please look at this in the large size and you'll see the starbursts in all the water drops. I took this shot a couple of months ago when we had our first bout of hoarfrost. I dashed out the take photos, but the sun was melting the frost faster than I could capture it. I ended up spending about two hours taking photos of water drops all over the garden and yard. I remember being so excited that I forgot to get breakfast for my poor long-suffering hubby. You all posted a lot of great images today. I really enjoyed looking through them all. It is amazing how much talent is here on smugmug. I am constantly being inspired to try new things by all the creativity I see here. So, thanks, everyone for being SUCH an inspiration! Hope your day is lovely. I know Dave is getting buried in snow again in Seattle. I think we're all ready for winter to end.

I went into town this evening to get some more shots of the Christmas lights. I walked back up Steep Hill and took a few shots around the Jews House, the building on the left. It was built in the 12th century and is the oldest domestic building in the UK, possibly Europe. With the Cathedral just poking above the trees on the hill I thought sepia worked well with this. I had a bit of luck with the positioning of the girls as they walked past the light.

I've added some more photos from tonight in the gallery here; http://www.lightanddreamsphotography.com/Photography/CHRISTMAS-LIGHTS/10418872_wA9mz#723948638_u9mhV

DailyPhoto 11-27-2009

Just finished processing this summer HDR shot of the historic Moore House in Yorktown, Virginia. Toned-mapped but no additional PP other than a minor crop.

About the Moore House and the birth of a nation:

At 10 o'clock on the morning of October 17, 1781, a drummer beating a "parley," and a British officer with a flag of truce, mounted a parapet south of Yorktown. The allies saw the signal, and soon the incessant, devastating artillery fire ceased. A hushed stillness fell over the field.

Lord Cornwallis, realizing the defeat of his army was inevitable, sent a message to General George Washington:

"Sir, I propose a cessation of hostilities for twenty-four hours, and that two officers may be appointed by each side, to meet at Mr. Moore's house, to settle terms for the surrender of the posts of York and Gloucester."

Have driven past this building in a neighboring village a couple of times and just knew it needed to be snapped. All sorts of processing on this one (it's taken me ages). Single shot, saved as 3 different exposures and subtle HDR processing in Photomatix, then into PS and I had a mega job to clone out another building that occupied the entire left hand side, then all sorts of minor tweaks, the most significant being a bleach bypass effect in Color Efex Pro.
