DailyPhotos > popular today > November 28, 2009 - "B-17 Flying Fortress"

We were fortunate to get some shots of three planes (P-47, B-17, B-25) at the Galveston Flight Museum shortly before the planes left for an air show.

This is my attempt at creating a circa 1944 "Mission Ready" feel to this image. The SOOC can be viewed at

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress is a four-engine heavy bomber aircraft developed for the United States Army Air Corps (USAAC), introduced in the 1930s. Competing against Douglas and Martin for a contract to build 200 bombers, the Boeing entry outperformed both competitors and more than met the Air Corps' expectations. Although Boeing lost the contract due to the prototype's crash, the Air Corps was so impressed with Boeing's design that they ordered 13 B-17s. The B-17 Flying Fortress went on to eventually evolve through numerous design advancements.
The B-17 was primarily employed by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) in the daylight precision strategic bombing campaign of World War II against German industrial, civilian, and military targets. The United States Eighth Air Force based in England and the Fifteenth Air Force based in Italy complemented the RAF Bomber Command's nighttime area bombing in Operation Pointblank, to help secure air superiority over the cities, factories and battlefields of Western Europe in preparation for Operation Overlord.[4] The B-17 also participated, to a lesser extent, in the War in the Pacific, where it conducted raids against Japanese shipping and airfields."

DailyPhotos > popular today > 2009 11-27 Day 8 :D. We decided to go for a bit of tummy time today since she was alert and active. She didn't cry, and was able to pick her head up pretty well. She managed to get herself rolled over onto her back from here as well, but I think that had to do with the weight of her head more than anything else.

I'm too tired to do anything but watermark and a slight crop. Thanks for all your comments on this series! It's been a blast, and will continue to be a blast.

DailyPhotos > popular today > November 19, 2009 - "Point Bolivar Lighthouse"

Photographed one week ago.

from NPR (2008)
"It has become clear that Galveston Island was nearly ruined by Hurricane Ike. But compared to the Bolivar Peninsula, just northeast of the island, Galveston was lucky. Instead of entire neighborhoods, entire towns disappeared.

Upon returning to Gilchrist, residents who had lived in the coastal town for more than half a century could not locate their houses or even figure out where their street had been. ....."

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Point Bolivar Light is a historic lighthouse in Port Bolivar, Texas, that was built in 1872. It served for 61 years before being retired in 1933, when its function was replaced by a different light.
The current lighthouse is at least the second structure at the site. The first lighthouse was built in the mid 1850s and was pulled down during the Civil War so that Union warships could not use it as a navigational aid.
During the Galveston Hurricane of 1900, the lighthouse served as a shelter for at least 125 people, saving their lives. It also survived another hurricane, in 1915, where winds of 126 miles per hour were recorded. The first lighthouse keeper, H.C. Claiborne, retired in 1918, after witnessing those two storms, and was replaced by a Captain J. Brooks. In 1947 the lighthouse was sold and, although still standing, is not open to the public. The 1970 film My Sweet Charlie, starring Patty Duke and Al Freeman Jr. was filmed at the lighthouse and adjacent caretaker's house.
The lighthouse is adjacent to the Houston Audubon Society's Horseshoe Marsh Bird Sanctuary.
The lighthouse was reported to have been destroyed by Hurricane Ike in September 2008. However, later eyewitness investigation found the structure appeared, at least from the air, unharmed.
