DailyPhotos > popular today > 4.12.09 - Rhapsody in Sepia

I took this at the Christmas Market last night. I'd hoped to go back there this evening, but it has been a very long day and my cracked rib (it's a long story) is giving me some serious grief. So I had a play with the shots from last night instead, and sepia seemed to work on this one. Photos can't convey the true atmosphere of the Christmas Market, the sounds and smells, the pushing and shoving :)

Roast chestnuts, wild boar sausages, mulled wine, yummy! I'm putting together a gallery of the Market here http://www.lightanddreamsphotography.com/Travel/LINCOLN-CHRISTMAS-MARKET-2009/10526553_uJU9o#731057440_yNTeM

Huge thanks to everyone who has taken the time to comment on my photos while I've been busy elsewhere again. Especially those of you who take the time to visit my other galleries.

Devil’s Den
So far, this is my gem. If it looks familiar, it is because it is the location of one of the most famous Matthew Brady photos from the Civil War. http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/cwphtml/cwpcam/cw00171.jpg I was kind of sad when we started to drive away from Devil’s Den because I was looking for this spot. But as we drove around the back, I saw it. This is one of those spots where it seems like you can hear the voices of the soldiers carried on the wind. I walked into this little cubby to peak over the wall and see what this soldier’s view was like. As I stood in that corner and looked over the wall, I thought I heard a man moan. It was pretty spooky and made me really sad. So as I looked over the wall toward Little Round Top, I laid my eyes on what was probably the last thing this soldier ever saw. It wasn’t a life changing or defining moment for me. But it was certainly a profound moment that I will never forget.

If you are looking for the photo info, it is absent because I used an HDR program to align 3 exposures. When I saved the resulting image, the photo info disappeared. :(
The 3 images: focal length 35mm
f/4.0 at 1/80 sec, 1.76 exposure bias and 200 ISO
f 5.6, 1/125 sec, 0.00 exposure bias and 200 ISO
f 9.0, 1/250 sec, 2.00 exposure bias and 200 ISO

The James R Barker...a self unloading Bulk Freighter. Built by the American Ship
Building Co in Loraine, Ohio at a cost of 43 million dollars. It was chistened in August 1976. I am standing on the bank of the St. Clair River looking across to Sarnia, Ontario.
DailyPhotos > popular today > December 5, 2009 Aroid House
I wanted to show you another one of the "rooms" at the Garfield Park Conservatory. This is the Aroid House with yellow glass lily pads designed specifically for this room by Dale Chihuly a renowed glass artist. The kids enjoyed sitting for a while watching the fish. Here's a close-up of some of the glass.

(aroid: Any of various perennial herbs in the arum family, including houseplants such as the anthurium, dieffenbachia, and philodendron)

Update: Yes we would love to have Chihuly glass but it is beyond expensive. His work is exhibited in hundreds of museums and public places and I think that's because only governments and museums can afford it. There's probably a collection near you.
