Monday, February 27, 2012 "EARLY SPRING BLOSSOMS AND BUDS" (Japanese Magnolias) "One of the most attractive things about the flowers is their beautiful reserve." ~ Henry David Thoreau First of all, I genuinely appreciate your comments on my "Red Baron Squadron" aircraft photo yesterday; it landed in the #1 (numero uno) spot. There are always outstanding posts in this community, and I never take for granted that you take the time to peruse and comment on mine. SmugMuggers rock!!! Additionally, two days ago, I mentioned that it's been a while since I've been able to get out and take new photos. Well, yesterday evening, my hubby noticed these blooms on a tree in our backyard. The other day, I noticed that there were only buds. Isn't it amazing the changes that can occur in a few days? Once temperatures start warming up, Japanese Magnolias on this tree always wave goodbye to winter by launching an impressive display of large, pinkish flowers. Anyway, I grabbed my camera and took only two quick snaps; and we both liked this one best, as it shows off the flowers and buds against that deep blue evening sky. Finally, I was so elated to have the camera back in my hands:). Sunday, February 26, 2012 "RED BARON SQUADRON" "When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it." ~ Henry Ford SOOC, uncropped; flash didn't fire Polished to perfection, and built in 1943 comes this 69 year old Stearman E75, N802RB of the Red Baron Pizza aerobatic team. It carried Boeing construction number 75-6451. The Red Baron Squadron was established in 1979 as a promotion for Red Baron Pizza. The squadron flew vintage Stearman biplanes and was the oldest civilian air team in the United States, attending airshows throughout the country and flying formation aerobatics. Their base of operations and air museum was at the Southwest Minnesota Regional Airport in Marshall, Minnesota. In 2007, after 28 years of flying, the company announced the retirement of the squadron. Friday, April 6, 2012 "WHAT IS IT?" “Each of us, famous or infamous, is a role model for somebody, and if we aren't, we should behave as though we are -- cheerful, kind, loving, courteous; because you can be sure someone is watching and taking deliberate and diligent notes.” ~ Dr. Maya Angelou Can you guess what this is? Special effects or not? Even I was amazed at how this turned out, as I was just playing around with various shots. It does look like an abstract and a work of art, in my opinion. I genuinely appreciate your comments on the table setting post yesterday; it landed in the #2 spot. Please know that I look forward to perusing and commenting on your outstanding photos, also. Each day, I am so honored to be a part of a community of people who share a like passion for photography. Today is Good Friday and a day off for most people, including moi......woo hoo!! Have a safe and blessed "Resurrection Weekend," my friends. ***#1 photo of the day and all-time*** (photo taken 4/1/2012) My Homepage: http://www.Godschild.smugmug.com
Sunday, June 17, 2012 "NECKTIES" "Neckties satisfy modern man's desire to dress in art." ~ Harry Anderson "Fathers are the biggest source of strength for a child. The innocent eyes of a child perceive father as the all-powerful, most knowledge, truly affectionate and the most important person in the family. For daughters, fathers are the first men they adore and fall in love with. While for sons, their fathers are the strongest person they know and someone they aspire to emulate. Even for the grownups, fathers are someone whom they look up to for the most experienced and honest advice that is always in the best of our interest. For this great figure in our life that we know as father - it becomes our utmost duty to pay our humblest tribute on the occasion of Father's Day." ~ Reprinted text from here: http://www.fathersdaycelebration.com/tribute-to-father.html Happy Father's Day to biological and surrogate (one who takes the place of another) fathers, father-figures, Godfathers, and mentors - both natural and spiritual. Speaking of sports..........Miami Heat will host Oklahoma City Thunder in game 3 of the NBA Finals tonight. The series is now 1 - 1. Go "young guns" of OKC! I'm appreciative of your comments on yesterday's "Cherry Blossoms" (remix) photo. Be blessed and share the rest! ***#1 photo of the day and all time*** (photo taken 4/4/2012) My Homepage: http://www.Godschild.smugmug.com
Friday, July 6, 2012 "VERONA YELLOW PERSIAN SET with KOHL BLACK LIP WRAPS" by Dale Chihuly (1999) "Color is like food for the spirit - plus it's not addictive or fattening." ~ Isaac Mizrahi SOOC photo, hand blown glass; 15 x 19 x 18 inches An encounter with Dale Chihuly's works is always a spectacular reminder that glass is not just something to see through or drink out of. Artist's Statement.........."The Persians started out as a search for new forms. I set up Martin Blank and Robbie Miller in a corner of the hotshop at Pilchuck. I would make large pencil drawings for them with a couple of dozen small forms, and then I would put an X under the ones I wanted them to go for. Over the next year, we made more than 1,000 miniature experimental forms." ~ Dale Chihuly Thanks for your overwhelmingly kind comments regarding yesterday's photo. I am elated that you are enjoying this series. I'll post a few more Chihuly masterpieces and then I'll post another subject:). Sunday, July 1, 2012 "SPEARMINT SEAFORM SET with CINNAMON RED LIP WRAPS" by Dale Chihuly (2001) "One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the BEAUTY of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple." ~ Psalm 27:4, The Bible (KJV), visit Bible Gateway @ www.biblegateway.com SOOC comes this hand blown glass, measuring 10 x 21 x 12 inches. Everyone knows that I absolutely LOVE Dale Chihuly's glass art. If art is the expression of imagination, then Dale and I both dream in very vivid colors. "The Seaforms seemed to come about by accident, as much of my work does—by chance. We were experimenting with some ribbed molds when I was doing the Basket series. By blowing the pieces into ribbed molds, it gave them more strength. It's sort of like corrugated cardboard—or actually, like sea shells themselves, which are very often ribbed. Then the Baskets started looking like sea forms, so I changed the name of the series to Seaforms, which suited me just fine in that I love to walk along the beach and go to the ocean. And glass itself, of course, is so much like water. If you let it go on its own, it almost ends up looking like something that came from the sea." ~ Dale Chihuly, Artist Dale Chihuly's official website is www.chihuly.com Have a blessed day, my friends. Wednesday, July 4, 2012 "RED, WHITE, BLUE..........and YOU" "Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country." ~ John F. Kennedy, 35th President of the United States of America (USA) Also, in front of the nearby courthouse were 98 "Flags of Heroes" - representative of veterans of their county. Photo is here: http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/23332140_T6MdZL#!i=1922274706&k=SmVm9Kp&lb=1&s=A Independence Day honors the birthday of the United States of America and the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Thomas Jefferson, is the author of the Declaration of Independence. He led a committee that crafted the declaration between June 11-28, 1776. Jefferson and other discontented representatives from the thirteen colonies, voted and approved it on July 4, 1776. The document declared freedom for the 13 colonies from British rule. It currently resides in the Exhibition Hall of the National Archive in Washington, D.C. Did you know that The Declaration of Independence was not signed by all representatives until August, 1776. To make it official, John Hancock, President of the Continental Congress signed it. Now, can anyone guess where the saying "put your John Hancock on it" came from? Red, white, blue, and you............God bless America and its people! Have a wonderful Wednesday and a safe 4th of July holiday. Thursday, June 7, 2012 "DELICATE BEAUTIES" “Never make someone a priority when all you are to them is an option.” ~ Dr. Maya Angelou This summer, I am only perusing and commenting on photos as my limited time permits. Although it is summer vacation, I am not idle. This is a very busy time for me, as I have embarked upon a new and very challenging endeavor. Don't miss a blooming thing this spring! This is one of my favorite flower captures. An abundance of colors, fragrances, and scenic views await you in these gardens. Also, I read that the meaning of hibiscus is "delicate beauty;" thus, the caption. These orange hibiscuses are amazing tropical flowers that come in many shapes, sizes and varieties. They are known for their beauty and their large, colorful blooms. You can plant hibiscus flowers indoors, outdoors, as a shrub, or as a simple flower. With all of the different options available, who would not want to plant this flower? SPEAKING OF SPORTS: In the words of Reggie Miller, we watched "greatness grow up" last night as the "young guns" of OKC defeated the San Antonio Spurs in OKC and ended the series 4 - 2. OKC has advanced to the NBA Finals........woo hoo!! Tonight, Boston Celtics will host Miami Heat in game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals. The series is 3 - 2 with Boston leading the way. The family and I are pulling for Boston. If Boston is victorious tonight, they will go on to face OKC in the NBA Finals - date TBD. I truly appreciate your comments on yesterday's "Banana Tree" photo; it was the #2 photo of the day. Congrats to Maryann (aka "fotomom") for the #1 photo. Hang in there; tomorrow is Friday. Sunday, April 22, 2012 "THE PHOENIX" "Hold fast to your dreams, for without them life is a broken winged bird that cannot fly." ~ Langston Hughes SOOC........a different twist, but nevertheless, here's my contribution to fellow SmugMugger L. Perry Fuqua's "Earth Day" Challenge. Of course, the colors were the initial attraction to this work of art. This photo was taken as we were walking through the airport to await the boarding of our flight for home from Phoenix, AZ to Houston, TX. Unfortunately, I didn't get the artist name. DISCLAIMER: The following views are not my personal views, opinions, or beliefs. The texts are included as background, informational purposes only. A card was given to me by a young man who was standing in the store after I snapped this picture. The following texts were written on it. Coincidentally, when I uploaded the Arizona photos and started putting the dates on them, this one just so happened to fall on today. With that said........ "The Phoenix" is associated with triumph over adversity, and that which rises out of ashes. It is symbolic of hope, purity, faith, eternity, and light. The Phoenix not only represents immortality but also an individual who stands apart from the rest, a person of rare qualities." ~ Reprinted text from the information card that was sitting on a nearby table Additionally, "Only one Phoenix exists at a time. When the mystical bird felt its death was near, it would rebuild a nest of aromatic twigs in which it burned from the heat of its own body. The Phoenix would be consumed by the flames and then would resurrect from the ashes. The Phoenix's flight has been said to represent the capacity to leave the world and its problems behind, flying toward the sun in clear pure skies." ~ Reprinted text from the information card that was sitting on a nearby table Thanks for your comments on the collectible "Salt and Pepper Shakers" that landed in the #1 spot yesterday. Have a beautiful and blessed Sunday. Sky Harbor International Airport Phoenix, AZ ***#1 photo of the day and all-time*** (photo taken 12/31/2011) My Homepage: http://www.Godschild.smugmug.com
