Tuesday, January 25, 2011 "PULLING STRAWS?" (The Metamorphosis) "Remember when looking in the mirror, it is always looking back at you; the reflections seen are only ever as kind or as ill as your own projections." ~ Morrigan I didn't have to pull straws for this one.......woo hoo!!! This is MY FIRST PP'd IMAGE (focal b/w, uncropped, however). I stepped outside of my comfort zone. Furthermore, I am such a "visual" person. On Sunday, after creating yesterday's POTD using marbles and the mirror, I decided to see what image I could create with straws and the mirror. Too much time on my hands? Well, all work and no play....... you know what they say. Golden Fields & Blue Mountains October 2008 Taken in Montana, Madison River Valley, just after a storm.
A golden day
Butterfly - Jun 3 2009 I was shooting roses today when all of a sudden 7 butterfies drew my attention. They seemed particularly fond of these tiny pinkish red flowers... and were not disturbed by my presence. I had a good 150 shots of them in less than 10 minutes. I like this shot because of the neat details on the head.
20100224-4872 ~~Fogged and dreary rising; the weather's disagreeable too. Awake too late, eyes open, scrutinizing sleep. Fatigued, not tired. Why? I haven't a clue. Seldom works, that senseless habit, enumerating sheep. Adding insult to injury, I believe I dreamt, a ewe? What a bizarre way to begin one's day; much less, stretched across two. Weather guys preach prediction; Nay, they ALERT, ADVISE, and WARN, more wintry white stuff approaches. Alas, my view only precipitates scorn. Cold rain, go away! To you, I've no more to say. ~~ As you can see, the white stuff did make an appearance, a brief, gray, and wet one; so I added my own touch of surreality, by boosting the color to the max. Would have needed a bigger box of Crayolas to get any more out of this one, the file was just too lax. Thanks for the words on the box turtle carapace. I have another one waiting in the wings; still life insurance for a different rainy day. Donna asked, "So, just what DO turtles pine for?" I don't know, but I'm willing to wager it's not lying on their backs counting sheep, stars, or snowflakes. :D Finally, as a few have undoubtedly noticed by now, I made a commitment to myself at the beginning of the year to expand my vocabulary and advance my creative(?) writing skills. Both had taken a turn for the worse quite some time ago, along with proper punctuation, grammar and, most critical, thought. Oddly enough, this world of brevity we now live in, with Facebook, Twitter, SmugMug, and so on, is where I happen to spend most of my writing time. It sort of goes against everything these sites were designed for; so excuse the long-winded captions, comments and silly prose. It's just my way of expanding what I knows. Of course I take none of this too seriously, just like my photos, and anything I put out is open to comment, criticism, or cajolery.
28.04.10 - Kaleidoscope When I walk into town I try to plan my route around photo opportunities, indeed I do the same if I drive in too. But this afternoon I was on foot, and on the way home I took a detour through the Arboretum to see what was new. As it happened there were plenty of new flowers in bloom, which gave me the opportunity to grovel around on my stomach to see what outrageous bokeh I could manage to get! Apologies for any burned out retinas that might be caused by this riot of colour. 12/21. Big Sur Sunset and waves_DSC1781. I captured this at Sunset in the middle of the rocks and waves. The waves would come crashing in and through this little trough between the rocks. My friend I was shooting with got stuck down in the trough when the wave came in and almost lost his camera! Wow! Thanks for the awesome comments on my image! My SmugMug site has other images you should check out and also follow my latest on my Facebook Page here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Yosemite-and-Bay-Area-Nature-Photography-by-John-Harrison/190152125697
September 11, 2009 John.. I took your advice last night.... half the bottle. ;) Yesterday was just one more chapter in a month and a half of nearly constant stress. It started with a very unpleasant surprise having to do with Ian's job (he still has it - nothing has changed with his position -just unpleasant financial news). Then some extended family issues that is very emotional and highly charged and yesterday - the air conditioner decided to start screetching like someone was taking a power tool to it. $650.00+ later we have a new fan motor. I really wanted to drink the entire bottle but couldn't because I have to be out and on the road by 7:15am. So John (very smart man that he is) suggested I just have half the bottle - which I did. Emily is home from school today - not feeling well at all. I will probably have her in to the doctor later this afternoon if I can get an appt. Why do kids (at least mine) always seem to get sick on Fridays and then there is the mad dash to the dr before the weekend hits.
2-1: Saturday evening we had quite a nice sunset, so I took a walk along the Poudre trail near Prospect street hoping to find some good views. I found this waterfall like thing.
An early October snowstorm in Colorado Springs; best viewed in the larger sizes. I think it is always challenging to try to capture the actual snow falling so that it looks natural. In the largest sizes, you can really see the snow falling, so I was pleased with this. I sure appreciated your comments on my shot of the snow at the hospital parking lot. This community is always so encouraging. Hope you had a good weekend!
Delicate Swan - Sep 23 2010 She (he?) was all alone... Did some (LOL) PP on this shot to make a kinda delicate picture.
January 7, 2012 This shot was taken just after sundown somewhere along the Mississippi coast of the Gulf of Mexico. We had stopped to walk on the beautiful white-sand beaches and take some photos. Just as we left, we stopped at a nearby marina to put gas in the car and I couldn't resist taking this photo. Frame added in Picnik. I hope you enjoy this tranquil setting captured in this photo - it's going to be one of my favorites from our recent vacation. Check it out in X3 for all the color, reflections and details. Thanks for your comments!!! Have a fabulous weekend!!! Linda
Frozen Tobolsk Kremlin. (1.2.2012) Off to Rome tomorrow afternoon so may be MIA the rest of the week. Hope everyone's enjoyed their holidays & renewed for a fresh start to 2012.
27.07.15 - The End or Just on Hold? A few years ago now a series of life changing events prompted me to try to make a living from my passion for photography, and so Light and Dreams Photography was born. It was tough at first, I did two other part-time jobs to help me get started, but eventually I started to make enough money to survive on. I've never made much money from photography, but then I neither expected to or wanted to, just enough to pay the bills. I made good contacts in the local tourist industry that led to a steady stream of contracts, I also sold lots of images straight from this website and got other regular work through word of mouth. I did some photo journalism, wrote regular articles for magazines, did some corporate websites, personal portfolios, production photography on various film projects, commissions were varied and fun. But times change. Now everyone has a digital camera, few people buy photos for wall art, many people don't even hire a professional for their wedding photos anymore, businesses won't pay for images, even large media outlets rely on free photos from the public rather than pay for them. I've lost count of the number of times I've been asked to donate an image for someone else's "project" or "promotion". Social media is full of photographic "competitions" that are just a front for gathering free images that someone can use rather than pay a professional. Photography hasn't paid my bills for a long time now, but I carried on, pig headed, trying to turn things around. But no more. Today I'm probably going to sell my gear to put towards the bills. This could be my last daily, I've not decided what to do about that yet, but I don't just want to post old photos every day. It is a sad day but it has been a long time coming. My Smugmug site will run up to Christmas, then I have to decide whether to close it too. Thank-you for all your kind words and support over the years. It was people on the Smugmug Dailies over 7 years ago that gave me the confidence to become a professional photographer in the first place, it was good while it lasted.
"I Look Good in Red" One of our NV Camera Club speakers talked about how to photograph "street people". I don't feel comfortable approaching strangers on the street, but went out of my comfort zone to photograph this gentleman. I did give him a "tip" and showed him his picture. He said, "I look good in red"!
