"BULLET SHELLS WREATH"
(empty shotgun shell hulls)

"I don't have an attitude problem. You have a perception problem." ~ Unknown Author

I was wondering if this was too risqué for the dailies, especially with all of the school and other shootings occurring in the world today, coupled with the attention surrounding gun control. I hope this photo is not offensive to anyone; but I spotted this wreath from a distance at a business (unfortunately, I didn't get its name), and after a closer observation, I discovered it was pretty interesting, unique, and uncommon - ever so typical of myself.

Oh Happy Friday!!! Summer vacation begins and a few months of my own agenda - woo hoo, woo hoo, woo hoo:)!!!

Ariocarpus - I had to go to the cactus nursery for some soil and I stepped into the Mammillaria house for a few quick snaps. There were a pair of Quail in there that couldn't figure out how to get out because of me intruding, so I didn't stay long. Go back is on the "to do" list.

Thank you very much for commenting on my shot yesterday, I learn quite a bit from your comments!

Added note: I stand corrected it is not a Mammillaria (even though it was in the Mam house), it is a species of Ariocarpus, a cactus native to northern Mexico and south Texas. The true color was not too far off this being quite grey.
Blurry Night, College Station TX

Sarah Williams and I shot a beautiful College Station wedding last weekend at the Messina Hof Vineyard. The reception had a very cool wall of lights that we played around with throughout the night. This is one of the more artistic photos I created. The bride and groom were really into silhouettes so I hope they will enjoy this one. I hope it helps them to remember the little moments they had alone on what must have seemed like a blur of a day.

I love how wedding photography pushes me to focus on mood and emotion rather than technical discipline. There is so much more to telling a story than exposure and focus.

Today is a big day for me because I’m unveiling my new logo, seen here as my watermark. I bought a font and tweaked it in Photoshop. I plan to use it in the banner of my new photography website that will hopefully launch soon. What do you think?

UPDATE: Thanks Fan and Ed for your suggestions! It's funny that I actually have a more creative version that I initially liked more and I posted the two in a private group on Facebook and the people there unanimously liked this one best, for the reasons mentioned by Ed. The creative one was criticized for being illegible and busy while this one is classy and clean. And it took me about six hours to make this logo Mr. Fan, it's not just a font with large P and B. Lastly, a lot of research went into it as I've been looking at logos for the past month or so. I've posted both options to the smugmug daily group on facebook if you want to weigh in!

Critiques are always welcome.

5/24/2013 ~ American Basin, near Lake City, Colorado

A basin is a high mountain valley, and this one, the American Basin, near Lake City, Colorado is one of the most beautiful. This was taken two years ago but I just processed it last night with Topaz Labs new 'Clarity' program. I'm super impressed with the results! They have the program on sale for $29.99 through the end of May. I think that's half off, but I'm not sure.

Thank you all for the nice comments on my Cactus Flower shot yesterday! Have a fantastic Friday! SmugMuggers rule!
Outrigger canoe sailing off Dobu Island, D'Entrecasteaux Islands, PNG

The Melanesians have been building and sailing outrigger canoes long distances for thousands of years and this photos shows a good example of one of their double ended sailing outrigger canoes. It has a boomed lateen rig and this, combined with the double end, means it can be sailed in either direction. It is steered by using the paddle as a rudder (see the technique at large sizes). The sail is made of some kind of polypropylene.

Another view of the canoe and other Dobu Island photos can be seen here: http://goo.gl/VXOdw

Re the comments about perspective, I was standing on the deck of our ship when the outrigger sailed by.
