31.01.15 - End of Times, Alien Skies This image completes my 7th year on the Dailies, I didn't manage an unbroken year because I was ill back in October, but when I started my first year I wondered if I could even complete that! I'll be starting my 8th year tomorrow morning, hoping to find new challenges and things to try. This collage is a selection of my recent alien skies experiments, inspired by the guys at Roscosmos. The night time ones are spectacular but less believable than the misty ones I think. I wonder what Year 8 will bring? Thanks you to everyone who has stuck by me over the last 7 years supporting and commenting on my work. You all know what a challenge it is trying to find a shot a day :)

The Remains The remains of Joshua Trees that have died were plentiful in Red Rock Canyon. Somehow I found this grouping with the late sun, rather interesting.

February 1, 2015 Colourful Candles * I received a box of candles for Christmas that became my subject before I could burn them :) Q: Did I see something about a still life challenge, starting next Sunday?? A: Judy proposed a still life challenge starting next week and going for four weeks. The still life theme and style can be anything. Sounds good to me :)
Floating pancakes (my term) or lily pads (Mary's term) of ice. DP052-2014 Posted February 21; processed Feb. 20 I've been puzzling over this ice formation ever since I saw it. I now think I have a possible explanation for how it formed. It is on a stretch of the river immediately downstream from the tailraces of Geddes Dam. Water comes out at the bases of the metal plates of the dam gates under high pressure. The resulting turbulence creates a lot of foam. That soon disperses into rafts of bubbles that float downstream, and typically form into circular disc shapes. I believe that the round plates of ice are nothing more exotic than frozen groups of bubbles. In support of this hypothesis I note that the top surfaces of the plates are bumpy, as they would be if formed from bubbles (not flat, as they'd be if formed from fractured sheets of ice), and that you can see bubbles or remnants of bubbles around the edges of some of the plates. Voilà! Pancake ice! Taken February 12, 2014 (Title: Frozen Foam?) Thanks so much for all the kind comments on my photo of the duck floating on a reflection, accompanied by some of this pancake ice. I was a bit under the weather, and didn't spend much time on the computer. I hope to catch up today.
January 14. This is a 100 year old summerhouse in the dunes just 100 m. from the beach. I shot it just before sunset in order to get the glow in the windows and the dark BG. The foreground was darkened in order to draw all attention to this well-preserved house .
