Folly "a costly ornamental building with no practical purpose, especially a tower or mock-Gothic ruin built in a large garden or park." From the Canal & River Trust website: "Built in the early 19th Century, the gothic-style, Grade II listed Drayton Turret footbridge is located near to the entrance of the Drayton Manor theme park and is among the most ornate bridges anywhere on Britain’s canals. With two gleaming white turrets linked together by a wooden footbridge, the bridge looks more like something you would find in the pages of a fairy-tale book rather than along one of the nation’s busiest waterways. ..The bridge dates to when Sir Robert Peel (British Prime Minister and founder of the police force) built his new mansion at Drayton Bassett. The canal ran through his estate so it’s widely thought that Sir Robert wanted the bridge to be a feature along the canal rather than the more practical styles typically seen along the waterways."
21.05.15 - Photo Walk These are just a few shots from my guided photo walk on Wednesday evening, it took me most of yesterday to finish processing all the shots! This was one of the best photo walks we've ever had, so much done and seen. We started off at the new tank memorial that featured yesterday as my Daily. Then we walked through the nearby university campus and out of the city along the Roman canal of Foss Dyke. There is a whole different world along there, a community living in old boats of all shapes and sizes. Then we visited an old waterboard pumping station, now derelict and the domain of graffit artists, with Mother Nature slowly reclaiming it. We also visited the nature reserve of Boultham Mere with it's colony of rare and endangered water violets, possibly my favourite wildflower. We photographed the sunset from the Main Drain, one of a complex network of flood defences around the city, before walking back into town as darkness fell. It was meant to take 2 hours but was nearer to 3 by the time we finished!
