8/1/2014 ~ Sweetgrass Sweetgrass Baskets for Sale at the Charleston City Market, Charleston SC. These baskets are handmade by Craftsman, a skill passed down through generations. There is a lot of history behind this traditional craft, and I found a link to some information via the Charleston Public Library HERE Very interesting and worth reading if you have the time. The Baskets are the State Craft of South Carolina: Sweetgrass Basket weaving – Sweetgrass (Muhlenbergia filipes), being native to the coastal dunes of the Carolinas, provided the perfect material for African slaves to utilize their traditional skills and produce a tightly-woven coiled basket. This handcraft has been passed down through generations and a high concentration of basket weavers is still found near Mount Pleasant. To this day, the form of the sweetgrass baskets woven in South Carolina closely resemble their African counterparts. I was fortunate to have purchased two baskets during prior visits years ago. As with many things, as popularity gains, the price goes up! The larger sizes are over a few hundred dollars now. Thank you for the wonderful comments on yesterday's Savannah Waterfront shot!

The Waluliso Bridge This pontoon bridge connects the Danube Island (behind the camera) to the 22nd district dike, crossing the "New Danube" flood channel. The pontoons are removed in the winter and the ends raised. It is named after a "Vienna Original" of the 1970s and 1980s who wandered around town in a toga promoting peace and his mantra "Water, Air, Light, and Sun" (WAsser, LUft, LIght, SOnne). He also collected signatures for the successful preservation of the Danube Island as a recreation and nature preserve.

Thursday, July 31, 2014 "OPENING UP" “Minds are like parachutes; they work best when open." ~ Thomas Dewar SOOC; uncropped; flash didn't fire Love, Gratitude, and Appreciation........... "Horticulturally speaking, pink roses are a classic - they were the first color rose cultivated, since pink roses are most common in the wild. It went on to enjoy a long history in Western art and decoration before the Victorians went the whole nine yards with the pink rose’s sentimentalism, depicting it everywhere from wallpaper to upholstery to greeting cards. Since then, the world’s love affair with the blushing beauties has continued, but we now see it getting a more contemporary treatment in sophisticated bouquets." "The pink rose has always been associated with feelings of love and gratitude, but as evolving cultivation techniques have created a wider array of pink rose shades, the meanings attached to them have become more nuanced. It’s said that darker pink roses are symbolic of gratitude and appreciation, while lighter pinks are associated with gentleness and admiration. All good stuff, which brings us back to the original point that you simply can’t go wrong with pink!" ~ Reprinted texts from here: http://www.proflowers.com/blog/history-and-meaning-of-pink-roses Have a "pretty in pink" day!
