In the past year or so, Matthaei Botanical Gardens has taken what to my mind is a long overdue step and begun installing sculptures at various locations in the outside gardens. I think such works add a great deal to one's enjoyment of the spaces. Shown here is a work in cast bronze titled 'Face of Infinity', by Ted Bell. I was unsuccessful in finding anything online about either the artist or the work itself. It sits at the boundary between the Children's Garden and the Herb Garden portions of Matthaei. DP206-2014 Posted (late) July 25; created ditto I make no comment on my own response to this particular work. I don't want to bias or prejudice others viewing it for the first time. As you can see in the center panels, a bed of deep orange crocosmia is in bloom behind this work. Yellow daylilies and pale purple bergamot are also in bloom further away. I used a crop of one of my photos of the crocosmia to creat the top and bottom panels of the composite. Individual photos were taken July 18, 2014, at the Matthaei Botanical Gardens Title: 'Face of Infinity' Among the Eternal Beauty of Flowers
Belknap One-Room Schoolhouse25 July 2014 -- 206/365Johnston, Rhode IslandDating to 1897, this well preserved one-room schoolhouse sits near the center of what was once the Belknap Village section of Johnston. As is common in every one-room schoolhouse I've seen, there are two front entrances to the building. This was not a safety feature as would be true in a building built today, but was rather a means of segregating the sexes. Girls entered through the door on the left, and boys entered through the door on the right. I always found this concept amusing, since there was no gender segregation once inside the building. This image is a tone-mapped HDR (High Dynamic Range) composite of 9 images taken in 1-stop increments. Tone-mapping was performed in Photomatix Pro and the resulting TIF brought into PSE. The black and white conversion started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, boost black, boost white, and protect highlights. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.

The Artist's Viewpoint20 June 2014 -- 171/365Providence, Rhode IslandI planned to do a bit of street photography at lunch today, so I parked at the Roger Williams National Memorial as usual. There were about a half-dozen artists there painting various scenes around the Memorial. They are taking art lessons at Hamilton House, an adult learning exchange in Providence that offers a wide variety of art related courses for adults over age 55. The artists at the Memorial today were working in different mediums, ranging from oils to washes to - as in this photo - acrylics. One woman works in "water based oils" which is a concept I'm really going to have to research since the term seems chemically contradictory in nature. Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, details, boost black, and boost white. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.

Shredded24 July 2014 -- 205/365East Providence, Rhode IslandI went to the location of the old Crescent Park boardwalk, destroyed in 1954's Hurricane Carol, looking for interesting photo opportunities. It was low tied, so I was able to walk the beach a bit. This piece of driftwood leaning against one of the old boardwalk pilings caught my interest. One wonders what storm ripped that branch off a tree, but given the amount of shredding it was certainly violent. I love driftwood shots to begin with, and this branch had some interesting character that I thought would work well in black and white.Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, boost black, boost white, and protect highlights. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.

February 10... Beach #4. Almost every day I take Blif for a walk along the beach. Especially in autumn and winter the sky puts up magnificent shows. The other day this sky came up covering most colors even a bit of green at the left. The show went on for app. 10 minutes, and then it was all over.
