050211 Tree in Shohola Falls Long week last week with the shutter failing on my Nikon D50 and computer problems at work. Took a drive to Delaware Water Gap over the weekend to get away. Trying to adjust to my D60 but I liked my older camera.
Signs Back from visiting family and having a short break by ourselves too. Hope to catch up over the weekend. This caught my eye in a lovely village called Avoca in County Wicklow on the east coast of Ireland. August 13, 2011

The Dock Before Sunrise, Bayview TX I woke up in time for the blue hour before sunrise despite having only four hours of sleep that night, and driving 14 hours on very little sleep the day before. It was worth it. There was one burst of clouds on the horizon and they were well placed at the end of the dock I had access to. There was very little wind and the water was calm. The blue hour was already underway when I arrived and the sunrise colors were starting to trickle across the horizon. Mother Nature was not going to be out-shined by the fireworks the night before. This is a single 43 second exposure. I used a circular polarizer to increase the glare on the water so that it would be more reflective and so that the exposure of the water would more closely match the exposure of the sky. I had trouble focusing in the dark so I did not want to go below f/11 and risk having some of the dock out of focus. I had to take several shots and check the focus by zooming in on my LCD screen. When a 30 second exposure was still too dark, I went to bulb mode so I could hold the trigger down for as long as I needed. I used my other camera as a timer to help me time the shots. For a 60 second exposure I held the trigger down while firing two 30 second exposures on my other camera. This was probably supposed to be a 40 second exposure but I held the trigger three seconds too long. Bulb mode is never an exact science. Lastly, I started out shooting at 17mm, which really stretched the dock into the horizon and squashed the clouds. I've been pushing myself to stop shooting exclusively at 17mm and it paid off this time. Switching to 40mm compressed the frame by making the clouds appear closer and taller, and I think it created a more dramatic photo. I really like the long exposure effect on the water and I have been longing to try this technique on a dock since we went to Andaman Islands India back in early January. Sunday, February 26, 2012 "RED BARON SQUADRON" "When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it." ~ Henry Ford SOOC, polished to perfection, and built in 1943 comes this 69 year old Stearman E75, N802RB of the Red Baron Pizza aerobatic team. It carried Boeing construction number 75-6451. The Red Baron Squadron was established in 1979 as a promotion for Red Baron Pizza. The squadron flew vintage Stearman biplanes and was the oldest civilian air team in the United States, attending airshows throughout the country and flying formation aerobatics. Their base of operations and air museum was at the Southwest Minnesota Regional Airport in Marshall, Minnesota. In 2007, after 28 years of flying, the company announced the retirement of the squadron. I captured this moonset photo the morning the moon was it's closest to the earth in the past 18 years, March 19 2010. The sun still had not risen, so, the light you see in the clouds and reflected on the ocean was from the incredibly bright full moon as it was setting over the Pacific Ocean. We've had virtually non-stop rain over the past week, and this morning was no different - so I was lucky the moon peeked out of the clouds just a bit to add some mystical moonlight to the ocean and clouds.

I arrived there in time to catch a little fog for a moodier image. You can see the Herons nest in the trees. They are pretty far away. There is a big fence in front of all this so we can't get that close.

August 28, 2010 update - "Clouds Over Grapevine" An 8x10 version of this photo won Best Of Show and 1st Place in the City Views category for the annual "What's Great In Grapevine" photo contest. There were 106 amateur entries in the juried contest. January 31, 2010 - "Last Train To Ft. Worth" This was shot last Sunday at the historic Grapevine, Texas railroad station. I was checking out a Lake Grapevine marina for photo ops but did not see anything I liked. On the way home I noticed there were not many cars parked at the railroad station, so took the opportunity to shoot. That makes two Sundays in a row that my alternate venue has worked out :) Tourist trains run from Grapvine to the historic Ft. Worth Stockyards. footnote to Ed's comment - was shot HDR

"ANTIQUE CHEVY"
(pp version)

"Keep calm and drive a Chevy!" ~ Unknown Author

Lgood is one of the absolute best at capturing automobile shots and their reflections, and I immediately thought of her when I spotted this GM classic. Unfortunately, there wasn't an information card, so I am unsure as to the year of this "oldie but goodie." My hubby's guess is it's a "1930 something Chevy." The pink sign made spectators chuckle. It warned, "UNLESS YOU ARE NUDE.....PLEASE DO NOT TOUCH MY CHEVY! BUCKLES, BELTS, AND BUTTONS SCRATCH."

As you can see, I did some pp with this one, but it is uncropped. The original image can be viewed here: http://godschild.smugmug.com/gallery/16609546_tdrqK#!i=1274849067&k=9MMHm66&lb=1&s=A
