12/26/14 - Hope everyone had a great holiday! I saw these door handles at a local strip mall and had to get a shot of them! Thanks for your comments and good wishes on my Christmas ornaments in glass shot. I loved going through everyone's excellent holiday images when we got home from my daugher's this evening. We had a snowy Christmas in Colorado. Very pretty but it made for a bit of a stressful drive home from Denver to Colorado Springs.
A well dressed bankhar dog with a nice 'smile' (but don't let the smile fool you, see below) There were some great working dogs in Mongolia, but they weren't pets, and not friendly towards strangers. They spend their lives as guardians of the flocks. At the working ger (round tent-like dwelling) where I stayed they were tied to a post during the day and were quite vicious if you tried to approach them. The flocks of sheep, cows and goats come in close to the gers at night and the dogs are usually allowed to roam loose at night to deter predators....which made going out at night a bit scary. Bankhars are also called Tibetan mastiffs. They are an ancient breed of dog that guard the flocks of goats and sheep and other livestock and also guard the gers and other dwellings. They are not true mastiffs (mastiffs in the native language just means 'big dog'). This one is an example of a Do-khyi or "nomad" type of bankhar, which are smaller. The Tsang-khyi or 'monastery' type can be born in the same litter and are much larger and heavier, and these are the ones more commonly associated with the Tibetan mastiff seen at dog shows in the West. Some photos of a mounted Mongolian herder driving his horses across the steppes can be seen here (best larger), and also some photos of a mountain area where there were actually some trees (the steppes are treeless): http://goo.gl/8bhGRR 26/12/14 www.allelnfotowild.com

December 26, 2014 Had a nice Christmas with these four. Hope your Christmas was as wonderful.
December 26, 2014 Thank you all for your Christmas wishes and comments yesterday. I was thrilled to hear from so many of my good SmugMug friends. Your comments and critiques are very much appreciated. I hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas yesterday. Bill and I really enjoyed the day together, and the quiet time we shared with each other. We will have our second of the family Christmas meals and fun on Saturday evening - there's 5 new bicycles in the workshop that will be a surprise to the kiddos.. So you'll be seeing some photos of the fun and kids in the next few days. This unusual hood ornament was spotted on a Rat Rod at a car show that we attended earlier this year. I really liked both the car & the hoodie, and after converting this photo to Black & White - I liked it more. "Classic cars can be like fine wine: They are to be enjoyed slowly and appreciated for their many and varied attributes." ~ Me Have a great day my friends! Linda http://lgood.smugmug.com
Day 354- Christmas Sundown - Dec 25. Heading home after a delightful Christmas Day with family. Taken at Lake Hopatcong N.J. in the blue hour as a pale sun was setting.
Dec.26. The Turtle Farm in Grand Cayman. This pool has 350 sea turtles in it. There is one named Sparky that is 75 years old and had 35,000 babies. This is one of my favorite places since you can actually pick them up and get up close and personal with the smaller ones which I will show in tomorrow's daily. When I dive with them I never touch, but here I can.
Twice a year, in early winter, and again in early spring, I see significant numbers of trumpeter swans on this stretch of the river. I enticed several pairs to come closer by feeding shelled corn. Three pairs came to feed, while others remained far out in the river, or near the far shore. DP348-2014 Posted December 14; processed ditto See full resolution versions of these two shots, along with several other images for the swans taken on the same occasion, in my swans gallery, here: http://arctangent.smugmug.com/Birds/Birds-Waterfowl1-Swans/5655185_xzcB2w Gallup Park, Ann Arbor December 11, 2014 Title: They're Back! Trumpeter Swans on the Huron River Note added: The right hand picture is not a crop. It's the full frame as it came from the camera. With the swans in constant motion, coming closer and moving farther away, I couldn't always re-zoom and re-focus both for my shots. The zoom on the camera I was using (a point and shoot) is not exactly fine touch, so in camera composition on the fly with a moving subject is an adventure.
October 10, 2013 Red Mountain - as seen along one of the trails we were riding in Colorado. According to Wikipedia: Red Mountain is a set of three peaks in the San Juan Mountains of western Colorado in the United States, about 5 miles south of Ouray. The mountains get their name from the reddish iron ore rocks that cover the surface. Several other peaks in the San Juan Mountains likewise have prominent reddish coloration from iron ore and are also called "Red Mountain". Nearby Red Mountain Pass is named after Red Mountain, and the ghost town mining camp of Red Mountain Town is located at the foot of the Red Mountains. Have a "red-letter day today my friends." Linda
Here is my photo of the day taken in the Village of Horseheads N.Y. You can find beauty amongst all this cold. Enjoy your day! Thank you for all the comments.
