11.26.14 RIP Bessie the Cow While my brother has been unable to have his dog with him, I have been taking care of her. When she came here in early September I noticed what looked like a tiny sty in her eye. This image was taken on October 5th--you can see the growth on her lower eye lid in the black half of her face. By then it had really grown. For about a month I've been asking my dad to take her to the vet to have it checked out. It was growing fast and looked terrible. Yesterday my dad finally did. It was a cancerous tumor. The vet recommended putting her to sleep and my dad did. On Monday we got the news that my brother would not be able to have her with him. Living with my brother was not easy, but I do love him, so Bessie's loss hit me harder than I thought it would. I didn't like being stuck with my dad's dog and my brother's dog, but El Jay and I have worked hard to take care of them and i grew attached. While Wayne was living here Bessie got out in the front yard a few times and ran. This would trigger anxiety and panic in Wayne and he would become impossible to live with. Each time, Bessie was found and she was safe. I've tried so hard to get her safe and well for Wayne, but I couldn't.

Autumn Light The foggy days are upon us, but occasionally the sun breaks through - usually in the late afternoon. Here is a shot taken along one of the many former arms of the Danube in Vienna, not far from our house.

American coots (Fulica americana, family Rallidae) massed for their migration south for the winter. This is the first waterfowl I see, typically, that isn't a local resident when it comes time for migrating birds to pass through the area. It is also the one I see in largest numbers. According to Wikipedia, 'cover' or 'raft' are the correct terms for groups of coots. Though often referred to as ducks, coots are not closely related to true ducks, which are in the Anatidae family.
