Yates Mill Pond - December 26, 2010
11/05/09 - Historic Yates Mill Pond at Sunset I posted a picture of the actual water wheel in my gallery earlier this year. In this picture, you can't see the wheel, but you get this lovely reflection instead. After Joey's flu shot, I decided to make the best of a wonderful afternoon and go for a quick hike around the mill pond. Unfortunately, we were really there a good 30-60 minutes too late to be taking good pictures. I had to bump up the saturation on this one to improve the color. This is the same shot taken on 10/26 last year when the sun was better and the tree closest to the mill still had yellow leaves on it. http://fotomom.smugmug.com/Yates-Mill-Pond/Yates-Mill-Photo-Contest-2009/7088136_34LZC#454338880_TdGL2 In both cases, the sky looks better in the reflection than in the final shot. I'm not sure how to get around that...especially in last night's picture when the sky really didn't have much blue in it. We still have not had a frost or freeze at my house, but it look like it's coming Friday night into Saturday. I am storing ceramic bird baths and pots and taking in fragile plants that I can save. I sure wish today was Friday... HAGD, Maryann
The Artist's Viewpoint20 June 2014 -- 171/365Providence, Rhode IslandI planned to do a bit of street photography at lunch today, so I parked at the Roger Williams National Memorial as usual. There were about a half-dozen artists there painting various scenes around the Memorial. They are taking art lessons at Hamilton House, an adult learning exchange in Providence that offers a wide variety of art related courses for adults over age 55. The artists at the Memorial today were working in different mediums, ranging from oils to washes to - as in this photo - acrylics. One woman works in "water based oils" which is a concept I'm really going to have to research since the term seems chemically contradictory in nature. Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, details, boost black, and boost white. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.

Shredded24 July 2014 -- 205/365East Providence, Rhode IslandI went to the location of the old Crescent Park boardwalk, destroyed in 1954's Hurricane Carol, looking for interesting photo opportunities. It was low tied, so I was able to walk the beach a bit. This piece of driftwood leaning against one of the old boardwalk pilings caught my interest. One wonders what storm ripped that branch off a tree, but given the amount of shredding it was certainly violent. I love driftwood shots to begin with, and this branch had some interesting character that I thought would work well in black and white.Post processing started with a classic filter in Topaz B&W FX. I adjusted color sensitivity sliders, adaptive exposure, regions, contrast, boost black, boost white, and protect highlights. A levels adjustment was added in PSE.

February 10... Beach #4. Almost every day I take Blif for a walk along the beach. Especially in autumn and winter the sky puts up magnificent shows. The other day this sky came up covering most colors even a bit of green at the left. The show went on for app. 10 minutes, and then it was all over.
Yesterday I woke up at sunrise. The sun was barely over the horizon at southeast. As I looked out of my bedroom window I saw this landscape to the northwest with the full moon as a golden coin. I at once grabbed my camera, opened the window even as the temperature was minus 10° centigrade and made some shots. Here is one of them. 10 minutes later the sun was well over the horizon, the sky was lit and the moon hardly to be seen.
I waited for 6 months for the sun to go down in the midle of the road. Fortunately it did not rain that day. I brought a boy with me to wave good night to the sun. Suddenly I saw the birds comming from the left, and got them in "the decive moment".
January 7, 2012 This shot was taken just after sundown somewhere along the Mississippi coast of the Gulf of Mexico. We had stopped to walk on the beautiful white-sand beaches and take some photos. Just as we left, we stopped at a nearby marina to put gas in the car and I couldn't resist taking this photo. Frame added in Picnik. I hope you enjoy this tranquil setting captured in this photo - it's going to be one of my favorites from our recent vacation. Check it out in X3 for all the color, reflections and details. Thanks for your comments!!! Have a fabulous weekend!!! Linda
