07.11.14 A mascot for one of the Middle Schools at the 4th of July Parade. Yesterday was not a good day in many ways, but we got this far and today is already feeling better.

Masses of delphiniums in bloom make an impressive show, especially the intense blue cultivars. Viewed up close, a stalk of delphiniums just looks kind of messy to my eyes. But this variety holds an interesting surprise, with its white stripes at the center of each bloom. Unfortunately, there wasn't a label to identify the variety. 08/07/10 - Beauty on Orange For the 3rd day this week, I took my lunch break at Porter Farms and Nursery to get some refreshment at the ice cream stand and take butterfly pictures on their butterfly bushes. Nextdoor to Porters is Ogburn Landscape Supplies. Johnny has been fascinated this week watching the front loaders load mulch and rock into pick-up trucks. Mom has been using the one pile of orange tone sand for picture back-drops. The butterfly bushes are positioned just right;-) At any point, I realize I've posted 5 swallowtail shots already in 3 months, but this one seemed so different with the orange tone background and underbelly perspective that I thought I'd share it too. I'm thinking NC State Fairgrounds this AM for the flea market followed by the JC Raulstron Arboretum (which is a mile away) afterward if it's not too warm. We haven't done the flea market in a while, and I don't think I've ever taken the boys to that arboretum. It's tax free weekend in NC which means saving about 7.25% on clothes, school supplies, and computers. Kohl's was packed last night! Hoping you are having a great weekend so far and that it continues! Maryann

07-10-2014 "Natchez" This crepe myrtle is my favorite, first I like the white color against the green leaves and then being named "Natchez." They look so beautiful when they are in full bloom. I have several of these in my yard along with a couple other colors. The blooms are huge and so full. Thanks for your comments on my weed yesterday. Donna
Mokoyan-Gurevich MIG-15 The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15 (Russian: Микоян и Гуревич МиГ-15; NATO reporting name: "Fagot") is a jet fighter aircraft developed by Mikoyan-Gurevich OKB for the Soviet Union. The MiG-15 was one of the first successful swept-wing jet fighters, and achieved fame in the skies over Korea, where early in the war, it outclassed all straight-winged enemy fighters in most applications. Later, the MiG-15 would also serve as a starting point for the development of the more advanced MiG-17. The MiG-15 is believed to have been one of the most widely produced jet aircraft ever made, in excess of 12,000 were manufactured. Licensed foreign production may have raised the production total to over 18,000 The MiG-15 is often mentioned along with the North American F-86 Sabre as among the best fighter aircraft of the Korean War and in comparison with fighters of other eras. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikoyan-Gurevich_MiG-15 Planes of Fame Air Show, May 3-4, 2014 Chino Airport Chino, CA Thank you for your views and comments! 11/05/09 - Historic Yates Mill Pond at Sunset I posted a picture of the actual water wheel in my gallery earlier this year. In this picture, you can't see the wheel, but you get this lovely reflection instead. After Joey's flu shot, I decided to make the best of a wonderful afternoon and go for a quick hike around the mill pond. Unfortunately, we were really there a good 30-60 minutes too late to be taking good pictures. I had to bump up the saturation on this one to improve the color. This is the same shot taken on 10/26 last year when the sun was better and the tree closest to the mill still had yellow leaves on it. http://fotomom.smugmug.com/Yates-Mill-Pond/Yates-Mill-Photo-Contest-2009/7088136_34LZC#454338880_TdGL2 In both cases, the sky looks better in the reflection than in the final shot. I'm not sure how to get around that...especially in last night's picture when the sky really didn't have much blue in it. We still have not had a frost or freeze at my house, but it look like it's coming Friday night into Saturday. I am storing ceramic bird baths and pots and taking in fragile plants that I can save. I sure wish today was Friday... HAGD, Maryann

28.04.10 - Kaleidoscope When I walk into town I try to plan my route around photo opportunities, indeed I do the same if I drive in too. But this afternoon I was on foot, and on the way home I took a detour through the Arboretum to see what was new. As it happened there were plenty of new flowers in bloom, which gave me the opportunity to grovel around on my stomach to see what outrageous bokeh I could manage to get! Apologies for any burned out retinas that might be caused by this riot of colour. February 21, 2011 - "Restoration Questionable" This vehicle is on display in front of some Key West stores. I did some research and believe that nameplate on the hood is part of the original vehicle. Your response to my Key West sunset image was greatly appreciated.
