Just before dusk the sun came through the clouds and in that light I was shooting shadows on the wall... of a dog, me... and than a rose. Was pretty pleased with the result but when I wanted to put the rose back in the vase I saw this... maybe I had been looking in the wrong way :-) Managed to get a few shots before the sun was gone. Quite like this one...
DailyPhotos > popular today > 28th December: East Beach Cafe

Not your average cafe this, described by the Guardian as one of the top 5 beach cafes in the world. East Beach Cafe was completed in June 2007 and has since won more than 20 national and international awards for design, architecture, steelwork, craftsmanship and engineering.

On paper this building was made to be photographed, but I have to say I found it hard to get 'the' shot. I knew before arriving I was going to go for an abstract type shot of the sky and curves and took many shots of that type. But when reviewing the shots at home, I preferred this of a couple (who's daughter had just run inside), as it connects the abstract building to the real world. I also intended to have a colour shot, as the building is a fantastic rust colour, but again I was surprised that I preferred this mono conversion in Silver Efex Pro (used more control points in Silver Efex than ever before, to bring out the detail on the metalwork).

Had a cracking burger inside too ;-)

(Dec. 28, 2009) A shot from the trip back. I carried my camera with me today but didn't take any photos. This is what Jim fondly, well, sort of, calls this area. Not PC perhaps, but no more so than my referring to it as East Cupcake, MT. In fact, it is Congress, AZ and the start of a long descent into the Mojave Desert.
DailyPhotos > popular today > 12.29.09 = Traditions. This is the time of year for traditions and this is one in my family; Potica. (Pronounced po-TEET-za) I don’t know if any of you have ever heard of it. I think I have only meet one other person who has ever had it. It’s a type of nut bread that you roll. The goodies inside are ground walnuts with cinnamon and sugar. It’s fantastic. My grandmother used to send us a care package at Christmas filled with all sorts of cookies, candies and 1 loaf of Potica. It’s tradition to eat a slice Christmas morning. About a year or two after my grandmother passed away, my oldest sister Kelly had a dream. She dreamed that the four of us sisters made the bread for my mother. So, we secretly snagged the recipe from my mother’s house and made the bread. We had never made it before and it’s a very involved recipe. Well, it’s been 15 years ago since our first flour filled day and we have made it every year since. One year there was a snow storm, another year my sister Kim left the hospital with kidney stones to come bake. The doctor said are sure your want to go, that must be some kind of bread! Even after Kelly moved to Texas, she made it home several times to bake. A few years ago, our cousins joined in and it’s become quite a wonderful production. A day filled with family, laughter, a little flour and the smell of Potica lingering in the air. I hope you all have wonderful traditions of your own that create those wonderful holiday memories.

DailyPhotos > popular today > "Night Heron"
Day 301, Tuesday, December 29

The Black-Crowned Night Heron is a large bird..... 25 inches tall with a wing span of almost 4 feet. It may take them 2-3 years to reach maturity. They appear stocky and hunched with short legs and neck.

Because they hunt at night, they are rarely seen, even tho they are common throughout much of the world. Like other Herons, they hunt mostly fish, but also crabs, frogs and other birds eggs and young.

Adult black-crowned night-herons have black caps and backs, pale gray wings, white underparts, red eyes, and yellow legs with a black bill. This is a juvenile, as can be seen by his yellow bill and brown and white feathers.
