Dartmouth Rugby Banquet: A Celebration of Excellence 03/15/14 : Alumni, families, and guests from across the country gathered at the University Club for an inspirational reception, dinner, and presentation to celebrate the ongoing excellence, camaraderie, and leadership achieved by Dartmouth Rugby’s extraordinary student athletes and their coaches, both on and off the pitch. As part of the elegant banquet, attendees heard first-hand from the DRFC coaches and team captains about what it means to be a part of one of Dartmouth’s largest student organizations, and to represent our college domestically and internationally. Our own Rick Magnuson ‘79 has generously donated wines for the celebration from his Duckhorn Vineyards, and the Alden family donated the lovely Stanford Park Hotel.

Crystal Springs Bicycle Sunday Ride 03/23/14 : Crystal Springs Reservoir is a big, glistening, two-lake treasure worthy of more than a drive-by affair. This tranquil oasis is best seen by biking the Crystal Springs Regional Trail, which borders the reservoir for 15 miles. The southern part of the trail (from Highway 92 to Filoli Nature Preserve) runs along Cañada Road, and every Sunday from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm the road is closed to cars for Bicycle Sunday—literally paving the way for bicyclist, walkers, and joggers.

San Francisco’s Version of the Playboy Mansion 03/30/14 : Welcome to the San Francisco Armory (now home to Kink.com—an adult entertainment production company). Our 90-minute look into the mysterious five-story mansion of porn was led by employees of Kink, the production company that acquired the building in late 2006, and is owned by a fellow Ivy alum. Our VIP experience took DSV members though all five floors of the landmark fortress originally built to service the National Guard, as well as tour the elaborate and cinematic sets that have since been constructed by Kink's Art Department for use as production studios. Not only did alumni see where Kink operates, but they also saw where some scenes from the first "Star Wars" movie (yes, the PG-rated version) were filmed, and so much more.

Mt Tam Steep Ravine Hike to Stinson Beach 04/12/14 : The Dartmouth and Northwestern alumni clubs met for an exhilarating, docent-led hike of the Steep Ravine Trail. We started high on Mt Tam and ended on the sands of Stinson Beach—about 2,000 feet of elevation change over the course of roughly 3 miles. Hikers met at Pantoll Ranger’s Station. The entire group followed the Steep Ravine path alongside Web Creek before descended down Mt. Tam. Alumni enjoyed views of majestic Redwoods and local flowers. Web Creek’s waters etched a unique trail deep into the landscape over millennia, which includes several waterfalls and many sharp declines. The steepest of these sections is navigated by an ancient wooden ladder. Near the end of the Steep Ravine trail, we diverged along the Dipesa trail and headed directly into Stinson Beach. Hike leaders then ferried the group back to the trailhead, after which the entire team joined in for a meal in downtown Stinson Beach.

Portola Valley & Alpine Railroad Hosts Dartmouth Day 04/26/14 : Founded in 1979, the Portola Valley & Alpine Railroad (PV&AR) is a 7.5-inch gauge, live steam railroad located on the Pony Tracks Ranch—the private estate of Silicon Valley legend Jacques Littlefield—in Portola Valley. Because of it location on private land, the railroad is not open to the public. The RV&A Railroad includes 1.2 miles (9.6 scale miles) of mainline with many sidings and one expansive rail yard. The facilities include nine steaming bays, a hydraulic lift, two engine houses, and a turntable. Most mainline switches are motorized with spring points. There are numerous water sources amongst the trees, shrubs and flowers.

Historic Tall Ship Sail on San Francisco Bay 04/06/14 : DSV members boarded the historic tall ship, Lady Washington, then set sail from San Francisco for an afternoon of fun, sea shanties, stunning sights, and sailing. In 1788, the original Lady Washington became the first American vessel to make landfall on the west coast of North America as well as the first to visit Honolulu, Hong Kong, and Japan. At 112 feet, the modern Lady Washington is an exact historic reproduction launched in 1989, and is the Official Ship of the State of Washington. Hoisting our unmistakable Dartmouth green Jolly Roger flag ensured the shipping lanes cleared at our approach. Our swashbuckling adventure was perfect for the entire family.

Tailgate Party: Dartmouth Men’s Rugby vs California 03/17/14 : You could smell the sweat. Your Dartmouth jersey begn glowing green in your closet. Your Dartmouth Men's Rugby fan blog started self-tweeting. Yes, rugby season arrived, and so did the Dartmouth Men's Rugby team. Which brings up the matter of tailgating. So, you secured tickets to watch the Big Green take on the Cal's Golden Bears. But before (and after, and perhaps during) that, you needed sustenance. Lots of it. Our Alumni Tailgate began at 5pm and continued during the match. After the match, the Dartmouth Men’s Rugby team joined alumni and friends for some epic tailgating.

NPR’s “Says You!” — Live Taping & VIP Reception 02/23/14 : Dartmouth alumni and their guests met for two LIVE tapings of NPR’s Says You!—the game of words and whimsy, bluff and bluster.  Host Richard Sher and hilarious panelists Barry Nolan, Francine Achbar, Tony Kahn, Carolyn Faye Fox, Arnie Reisman, Paula Lyons, and Philip Salkind were fast on their feet and smart on their tongues. They kept everyone guessing whether the ludicrous-sounding definitions are real or simply calculated to fool everyone! In addition to the shows, alumni and guests gathered with the cast in the “Green Room” for a private, Dartmouth VIP reception before the first taping and between shows.
