National Slate Museum, Llanberis : An interesting experience even for technophobes, is this museum, situated at Llanberis in North Wales and created with the help of a £1.6m Lottery Grant. Good use has been made of the Victorian workshops built in the shadow of Elidir mountain, site of the vast Dinorwig quarry. There are also some excellent walks around the adjoining the Padarn Country Park.

Barrington Court, Somerset : A Tudor manor house and gardens inspired by Gertrude Jekyll which was acquired by the National Trust in 1907 and was the first large country house taken on. By that time the house was in a very poor state of repair, having been used for the storage of farming equipment and after a fire in the 19th century.
There are pictures here from two visits, some years apart and in different seasons.

Charlecote Park, Warwickshire : An Elizabethan manor house built around 1551 by Thomas Lucy whose family had property here since the 12th century, and whose descendants still live in the house. The original building has been much extended and the gatehouse is now the only fully Elizabethan piece remaining.
