City of Racine - Drowning/Vehicle Recovery - March 5th, 2009 : Racine Police received a report Saturday February 28th, 2009 from the family of a 57-year-old man who reported him missing.

The family told police that the man had not been seen since the early morning hours of the previous day.

The family became concerned when the man failed to show up for work for his Friday afternoon shift and didn’t meet his mother for their weekly Saturday morning breakfast.

Police began an investigation into the missing adult and were call to the Root River near Kinzie Avenue and Rupert Blvd late Wednesday morning March 4th after four fishermen spotted a body in the water.

Racine firefighters were called to the river and assisted police by removing the body of a male from the water at which time he was tentatively identified by ID in his wallet as the missing 57-year-old man.

The body was transported to the Medical Examiners Office where it was scheduled to be autopsied Thursday. At this point it is not possible to determine the circumstances leading to his death.

At approximately 7:30 a.m. on Thursday morning March 5th construction workers installing a lift station in the area of Spring St and Luedtke Ave discovered a partially submerged car in the nearby Root River and notified police who then requested the Racine Fire Department Dive Team to assist in the removal of the car from the river with the help of Floyd’s Towing Company.

Fire department divers worked in frigged waters and swift currents for about and hour and a half before being able to secure a tow strap and cable to the car which was sitting precariously on top of a boulder at an angle.

The car was taken to the police department’s garage where criminalist examined the car for any indications of what may have occurred.

Late Thursday afternoon preliminary results were released by the Medical Examiner which indicates that the cause of death of the 57-year-old man was most likely a drowning. Toxicology reports are still pending.
