Florida > popular all-time > Amethyst Starling, aka Violet-backed Starling (Cinnyricinclus leucogaster) (October 1, 2006) Africa is home to 22 species of glossy-starlings. Related to the European starling found here in the United States, glossy-starlings have unique metallic plumage. These starlings are insectivores and feed on a wide range of insects and other invertabrates. The starlings will also opportunistically eat fruit. The Amethyst Starling is a small monotypic bird found over a wide range in Africa. Through most of the year, this bird occurs in small flocks that may be segregated by gender. During the breeding season, it breaks off into pairs of family groups. This bird spends most of its time atop the trees, occurring from woodlands and forest edges to savannahs and riverine areas; rarely is it seen on the ground. Its range is large, spanning from South Africa to Senegal in the west, up the eastern coast of Africa, and into as far north as Israel and Saudi Arabia. It is not found in deserts or thick forests.
