Coaraze, The Village of Sundials : Coaraze is described as one of the "most beautiful villages" in Provence. After visiting it I would have to agree. To get to Coaraze from Vence you drive east on the A8 and exit, drive north then east and up a mountain. I just followed the GPS directions. Coaraze is easily recognized as it sits perched on a hilltop. You don't drive into Coaraze. You park outside and walk in. It has a huge wall surrounding the village that protected them from the marauding Muslims and other pirates of the Med. Coaraze has a lot of sundials. I photographed six and I know I missed some. The streets are narrow, winding, up, down, and tunnels everywhere. The village is surrounded by olive trees. We met a kind old gentleman I will just call "Frenchy" who allowed me to take his photo.

Aix en Provence: Streets, the Saturday Market, Shops, and Churches : Mary Alice, my wife, her sister Nola, and I drove to Aix en Provence on Sept 20th, Wed. We found a place to park, got out and we were walking down the Cours Mirabeau when M.A. slipped on a slippery sidewalk, fell on her left knee and tearing the ligaments. The police were there immediately and called for an ambulance. She was taken to the Central Hospital of Aix and we learned that she needed surgery and would probably be in the hospital for 4-5 days. We attempted to make the best of it and as she recovered in the hospital, I managed to walk the narrow streets of Aix on Sat and Sun taking as many pictures as I could. I found the "market" on Saturday and the churches empty on Sunday.

Perched Villages of Provence : Provence is noted for its beautiful perched villages or as the French say, "villages perches." The architecture is not only beautiful but they were built for a purpose. These communities situated on a hill, mountain top, jagged ridge with limited entrances could control who came into their village. Provence was the raiding grounds for all sorts of barbarians from the north, east and west. These pirates would raid towns, enslave inhabitants and sack the village. In the volatile Middle Ages these high places could watch the valley and sea, warn of pirates or enemy soldiers coming from below. The homes were usually built around a lord's chateau forming a circle with a defensive wall complete with ramparts and canon. Take a look at the entry gate to St. Paul de Vence where unwelcomed guests found themselves staring down the barrel of a canon. In addition to its defensive structure these villages had many other things in common; a water source found in the town square, a lavoir or washhouse, a Catholic church, an iron caged bell or bell tower separate from the church, usually in the square and almost all the villages have a boulangerie (bakery) and cafe or bistro.
