Tuscarora, Nevada - A Ghost Town : Tuscarora, Nevada...classified as a ghost town although there are a few people still living there. It's most productive years were from 1870 to 1890 when its mines produced $40,000,000 in silver. The town's population was about four thousand people, split almost equally between whites and Chinese. The Chinese came to build the railroad and stayed to operate opium dens, brothels and gambling houses.
It now inhabits a hardy few even through the winter months and is, in all sense of the word, colorful . . . to say the least.

Dawson, NM : The Dawson, New Mexico Cemetery contains graves of the people who lived in the area, but also hundreds of white crosses of miners killed in mining disasters. Coal mines were first developed here in 1901 and Dawson became a home for miners from all over the world, especially Italy.

The first mining disaster occurred on September 14, 1903 when fire broke out in one of the mines and three miners were killed. The next tradegy occurred October 22, 1913 when Stag Canyon Mine No.2 had an explosion. 263 men were killed. Almost ten years later, another mine explosion ocurred on February 8, 1923, killing 121 men.

The townsite is on private property, so we were not able to get any photos of buildings. The cemetary provided an insightful look into the lives of the residents in Dawson.

Today, the cemetery is dotted with some 383 white crosses honoring the men that were killed in the explosions of 1913 and 1923. Numerous other graves in the cemetery display old tombstones, showing a variety of nationalities. Unfortunately, there are yet more graves that are unmarked

Cascade, SD : Cascade, SD was built in 1888 as a resort town with the anticipation that the Burlington & Missouri River Railroad would build its line through the valley to Hot Springs, SD. The railroad chose another route due to developers asking high land prices. The town began to decline in the earlier 1900's. The Allen Bank Building is the only structure still standing.
