Perry Creek : November 29, 2009. Dave, Bob and I tried out the new crossover trail from the Dickerman trailhead to Perry Creek trailhead. We finally hit snow, maybe a mile before the waterfall. Nice day.

My Last Unhiked Step in the Smokies, 2009 : I can vividly recall my first trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 1963 when I was only 13 years old. Joan Giles, a good friend and neighbor, took my younger sister Jane, little brother Johnny and me to the Smokies with a side trip to Cherokee in 1963. It'd be another sixteen years before I'd hike the Smokies again. Thirty years after I resumed hiking in 1979, I finished my "Last Unhiked Step" in the Smokies. Enjoy the photos. Visit my website to read the hike journal for this trip:

Calaveras Big Trees : Calaveras Big Trees State Park is located off Highway 4 near Arnold, California within the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. I took my friend Barbara there for her 70th birthday. It had been a few years since we visited the park. It was a perfect day in November 2009, luckily with some fall colors lingering. When you visit these 3000 plus year old giants you don't really feel that old! :)

El Hoyo Trek : We signed up with Quetzal Trekkers out of Leon, Nicaragua for a 2-day challenging hike. Our backpacks were weighed down with 9 liters of water each, a meal for 5 and camping gear. We initially began our trek up the desolate black Cerro Negro volcano and then hiked to El Hoyo volcano to camp. The next morning we were motivated with the idea of swimming and relaxing in a crystal clear crater lake.

Semuc Champey - Episode 3 : Guatemala continues to surprise us! We venture to the town of Lanquín to hitch a pickup truck down to the tropical humid forest where natural wonder Semuc Champey is hidden. Naturally occurring turquoise cascading pools are supported by a 300m limestone bridge, under which the Cahabón River flows. Mosquito nets required. Read the accompanying blog or view photo gallery

Lake Ingalls : October 10, 2009. A quest to see "the Larch" on the Lake Ingalls hike in the Teanaway area. Our larcherous desires were satisfied quite nicely...in fact there were almost too many larches (and definitely too many people)! We started out feeling very cold with a winter sky and spitting snow during the first couple of hours, it didn't stick around, and we did get a few peaks of sun before heading out for home. Fun day with Dave, Bob, and Geoff.
