At 7AM the water is like glass and the Clark's Nutcrackers are raucously talking to one another. It feels like another day in Paradise...
After 3 hours of thinking "well, the pass HAS to be over that crest" and being fooled again and again, the trail turns into a mixture of rock, snow and ice. The red color of the snow is from lichen; life clings to even the most inhospitable of places. This is the view from the top of the pass looking east.
A roiling, boiling creek from one of the pass tarns tumbles its way down to the main creek in French Canyon.
